Federal university sacks 460 workers

Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike in Abia, on Wednesday disengaged no fewer than 460 temporary workers, whose appointment had reportedly lapsed in February. The workers were recruited toward the end of the administration of former Vice-Chancellor, Hillary Edeoga, who left office in March 2016. According to a circular issued by the university, the temporary appointment, with one year validity, had lapsed. Nigeria’s foreign debt $11.4 billion, domestic N14.02 trillion by end 2016 – NBS

Total foreign and domestic debt stocks of the federal and the 36 states governments as at December 31, 2016 stood at about $11.41 billion and N14.02 trillion respectively, National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, reported on Tuesday. The statistics agency in its latest Nigerian Domestic and Foreign Debt report, 2016 said further disaggregation showed that $7.99 billion of the country’s foreign debt were from multilateral agencies; $198.25 million were bilateral (AFD) and $3.22 billion from the Exim bank of China credited to the Federal Government account. Senate backs down, begins screening of 27 Electoral Commissioner nominees

The Senate on Tuesday began screening of 27 Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) nominees sent to it by President Muhammadu Buhari for confirmation. Fire at Oba of Lagos’ palace may have destroyed traditional regalia – NEMA

The fire at the palace of Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, on Tuesday afternoon affected a section of the palace where traditional regalia were kept, an official has said. Gombe govt. waives retirement for 100 nurses, midwives due to manpower shortage

Gombe State Government has deferred the retirement of over 100 nurses and midwives who were due to leave its employ this year, as a shortage of manpower continues to tell on healthcare delivery in the state.
