Anenih’s son slumps, dies while playing lawn tennis

Eugene, a son of a former Peoples Democratic Party Board of Trustees Chairman, Chief Tony Anenih, has been reported dead. It was gathered that Eugene slumped and died while playing lawn tennis on Sunday in a Lagos club. Medical sources linked his death to heart attack. The death of Anenih’s son came less than a month after the deceased’s mother died in April. Efforts to reach him for comments at about 8.45pm on Sunday were unsuccessful. Nigerian archbishop Filibus elected head of Lutheran church

A Nigerian archbishop has become president of the Lutheran church. Archbishop Musa Panti Filibus was elected as head of the Lutheran World Federation on Saturday at an assembly held in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. Filibus, 57, is the second church leader from Africa to lead the Lutheran federation since it was founded in 1947. He comes from the northeast region of Nigeria, which has endured attacks by the Boko Haram Islamic extremist group. N. Korea test-fires missile, challenging new leader in South

North Korea on Sunday test-launched a ballistic missile that flew as far as 800 kilometers (500 miles) before landing in the Sea of Japan, the South Korean, Japanese and U.S. militaries said. 3 Suicide bombers target UNIMAID, 4 killed

Three suicide bombers attempted early Saturday morning to enter University of Maiduguri, (UNIMAID) but they were thwarted by security men. Two of the bombers detonated their explosives as they faced interrogation by the security men at the gate, killing one of them and injuring another. The third bomber, who had hidden close to a building near the gate, also detonated her explosive. She was the only casualty in the incident. Akwa Ibom State University says the institution has expelled 21 students for various offences committed in 2016. 258 Nigerians deported from Libya return home, some in pain

Authorities say hundreds of Nigerians deported from Libya have arrived back home, including one who sustained a gunshot wound. Deputy director of the National Emergency Management Agency, Bandele Onimode, says some of the 258 returnees are suffering from depression and malnutrition. 357 prison inmates to write UTME – JAMB

Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, says out of the 1.7 million candidates that will sit for UTME examinations today, 357 are prison inmates. Professor Is-haq Oloyede, Registrar of the board, disclosed this at a news conference on Friday in Abuja. Oloyede also said that the UTME examination scheduled for May 13 has not been postponed. Heavy gunfire in Ivory Coast in latest military unrest

Witnesses say there is new military unrest in Ivory Coast's two largest cities involving some of the soldiers who were behind a mutiny in January. The violence comes a day after Ivorian television broadcast some of the mutinous soldiers meeting with President Alassane Ouattara.
