Governors’ Forum elects new leader, deputy

Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State has emerged new Chairman of Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF June 2019-2021.

Mr Fayemi, elected through consensus last night, was nominated by Kaduna State Governor, Mr Nasir El-rufai and seconded by Delta State Governor, Mr Ifeanyi Okowa.

Sokoto governor, Mr Aminu Tambuwal was also elected deputy chairman of the forum, just as he was nominated by Lagos state governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode and seconded by Ondo State governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu.

Addressing Journalists after the meeting, NGF chairman, Abdulaziz Yari, said that the new NGF leaders emerged through consensus and were unanimously elected by the 36 state governors.

Speaking after his election, Fayemi said he and his deputy were happy by their emergence via consensus. He promised to build on the successes the forum had achieved right from the pioneer chairman, ex-gov Abdullahi Adamu of Nasarawa State.

According to him, the new leadership will build on the strong partnership with the federal government as led by Yari, adding that they will represent Nigeria, regardless of party affiliations and ensure the partnership with the federal government, legislature and development partners will be in the best interest of all.

Former chairmen of the forum are Mr Abdullahi Adamu, (Nasarawa, 1999-2004), Mr Victor Attah (Akwa Ibom, 2004-2006), Mr Lucky Igbinedion (Edo, 2006-2007), Mr Bukola Saraki (Kwara, 2007-2011), Mr Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers, 2011-2015) and Mr Abdulaziz Yari (2015-2019).
