How viable is the state of Biafra? Emmanuel-Francis Nwaolisa Ogomegbunam

First let me start with a dose of reality, an actual Biafran state recognised by the comity of nations world-wide is impossible. Why?Because no Nigerian leader will ever - and I repeat ever - want to be the one that presided over the 'balkanisation' of the country. And Nigeria, for all its faults, is slightly important on the global stage.

Secondly, Biafra is economically a long shot and has been one ever since Gowon created the twelve states. Another dose of reality given the Southern minority tribes is that given the choice between Nigeria and Igbo majority rule, they'll pick Nigeria every-time!

So unless you're one of those idiots who believe that fitting 40 million odd people into landlocked 22,337km2 of territory is a recipe for success, then you should see the problem there. You also need to calculate the future balance of payments debacle your would be country is heading for. Where does all the Meat, Onions, Groundnut Tomatoes, Beans, Wheat, Iron and many others in South-East Nigeria come from?It comes from Nigeria.

What would Biafra sell to make money to exchange for these products? If your first thought is coal and your second crude oil, again the problem there should be fairly obvious.

Thirdly, let's look at the demographic factor. The reason for all this agitation is a bunch of poorly educated, jobless youths. Think it through:  if South-Eastern Nigeria cannot create jobs for its youths now, what fantasy is driving you to believe that Biafra will magically create them, in between what will inevitably be a high military budget, environment defence funding (incase you're not aware of the erosion, destroying our homeland) and the need for infrastructure funding. Think of all the new houses all those 40 million new Biafrans will need, schools, hospitals, etc. Where will the money come from?

How many Eastern states have pipeborne water?  I'm sure you know of how notoriously difficult water is to find back east. You think Biafra will wave its hands and magically solve these problems?

Finally, not because I've run out of points but because this topic irritates me like no other! On the subject of demographics, any war declared by Biafra, Biafra will lose. Any war declared by Nigeria on Biafra, Biafra will still lose. Why?

Again simple numbers. You think the East has a high number of unemployed, easily indoctrinated youths? The North has 5x that number. They'll simply be funneled into the army and the havoc they'll leave behind will make 67-70 look mild in comparison.

To quote our ancestors, the fly that does not heed advice soon finds itself in the grave with the corpse.

Work for an economic 'Biafra' by voting in sensible politicians to represent us at state and federal levels, work hard at your studies or other profession and in time Nigeria will better for us.

Who am I kidding though? This is Nigeria. We would rather try the stupid route and fail!
