Opposition Senators pushed for President Muhammadu Buhari to face impeachment, 10-months before the end of his second term in office, over the country's spreading security problems, the Senate minority leader said on Wednesday. Nigerians go to the polls in February 2023 to elect a new president in a hotly contested vote where security and the state of economy will be the main issues. At a closed Senate session, Senators of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) tried to introduce a motion giving Buhari six-weeks to improve the country's security or face impeachment, Philip Aduda said. "Nowhere is safe in Nigeria, even…
2023 presidential election may go into a runoff with the emergence of Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso, a delegation of United States-based National Democratic Institute and International Republican Institute, said on Friday. According to them, the 2023 elections would be a departure from some of the political dynamics that defined previous polls in Nigeria. The delegation of the NDI/IRI which visited Nigeria from July 13-22 and led by Secretary of State for Ohio, Frank LaRose, stated these while presenting its first joint pre-elections assessment statement to journalists in Abuja.…
Christian Association of Nigeria on Wednesday dissociated itself from ‘Bishops’ who attended the unveiling of the vice presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Kashim Shettima, saying they were desperados who went there for themselves. The organisation said that although the presidential candidate of the APC, Bola Tinubu, was free to “hire mechanics and other artisans and sew clerical garments for them”, that effort would only add to their many ropes but would not change the need for fairness and justice. Vice President of CAN (19 Northern States and Abuja) and its chairman in Kaduna State, Joseph Hayab, said this…
Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) says Enoch Adeboye, its general overseer, will not endorse the presidential ambition of any candidate for the 2023 general election. The RCCG was reacting to online reports that Adeboye met Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), over the weekend. The reports also claimed the clergyman is not opposed to the APC’s Muslim-Muslim ticket and that he is in support of the presidential bid of the former Lagos governor. But in a statement on Tuesday, RCCG described the report as false. While asking Nigerians to disregard the report, RCCG said legal…
Oyo State House of Assembly on Monday removed Rauf Olaniyan as deputy governor of the state. The lawmakers quickly approved the nomination of Adebayo Lawal as replacement. Shortly after the approval, the state Chief Judge, Munta Abimbola, also inaugurated Lawal as Olaniyan’s successor. Olaniyan’s removal by the Peoples Democratic Party-dominated House followed the recommendations of the seven-man panel raised by the Chief Judge to probe allegations of financial recklessness, gross misconduct and insubordination among others levelled against Olaniyan. Governor Seyi Makinde quickly nominated Lawal, a lawyer and Chairman, Oyo State Housing Corporation, as the new deputy governor. The nomination of…
The 2022 governorship election in Osun State has come and gone but Nigerians would not forget it in a hurry. For various reasons, the election became a subject of interest. One should not expect less since it is the last off cycle governorship election before the 2023 general elections. All Progressives Congress (APC) wanted to retain its hold of the state, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was bent on extending its frontiers in the Southwest region. At the end of the day, the winner carried the day. However, some persons played key roles in the victory of Ademola Adeleke.…
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to declare the candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ademola Adeleke, the winner of the just concluded governorship election in Osun State, Southwest Nigeria. Based on computation of the final results announced by the electoral commission, INEC, the PDP polled about 403,374 votes while the APC polled about 358,948 votes. INEC is currently collating the final…
In continuation of the illegal practice of vote-buying that has characterised elections in the country, many political parties participating in today’s governorship election in Osun State have devised new strategies to induce voters, findings by Saturday PUNCH revealed. Our correspondents gathered that in spite of serial denials by the parties, the ruling All Progressives Congress and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party have concluded plans to pay between N2,000 and N10,000 per vote. It was also learnt that the parties had since Tuesday distributed the money to the wards and polling units to avoid being stopped by security agencies. The PDP,…
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says continuous voter registration (CVR) will end on July 31, 2022. The commission made the decision at an extraordinary session which took place on Friday. The electoral umpire said the exercise has also been extended to eight hours daily — from 9am to 5pm — instead of the current duration of six hours daily. Festus Okoye, INEC commissioner for information and voter education, said the exercise will now include weekends as against only weekdays. INEC had earlier fixed June 30 as the deadline for the ongoing CVR ahead of the 2023 elections — but the…
Samuel Kanu-Uche, prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria (MCN), says he will only support a presidential candidate who doesn’t engage in vote-buying. He spoke on Friday in Enugu at the graduation ceremony of 160 members of the church from the Enugu diocese, who were trained on various vocational skills. The prelate advised Nigerians against selling their votes, adding that politicians who engage in vote-buying have nothing to offer in terms of service to the nation. He, however, did not name which candidate he would support for the presidency. “I know that most of the candidates has nothing to offer, but…
