Ukraine sought more help from the West on Friday, pleading for faster deliveries of weapons to hold off better-armed Russian forces and for humanitarian support to combat deadly diseases. In Sievierodonetsk, the small city that has become the focus of Russia's advance in eastern Ukraine and one of the bloodiest flashpoints in a war well into its fourth month, further heavy fighting was reported. To the south, the mayor of Mariupol - reduced to ruins by a Russian siege – said sanitation systems were broken and corpses were rotting in the streets. "There is an outbreak of dysentery and cholera…

Ukrainian forces claimed on Thursday to have pushed forward in intense street fighting in the eastern city of Sievierodonetsk, but said their only hope to turn the tide was more artillery to offset Russia's massive firepower. In the south, Ukraine's defence ministry said it had captured new ground in a counter-attack in Kherson province, targeting the biggest swathe of territory Russia has seized since its invasion in February. The battle amid the ruins of Sievierodonetsk, a small industrial city, has become one of the war's bloodiest, with Russia concentrating its invasion force there. The battle for the Ukrainian city of Sievierodonetsk is brutal and will determine the fate of the Donbas region, said the country's president, as Russian troops lay waste to the city in an assault aimed at controlling eastern Ukraine. After failing to take control of the capital Kyiv, the Kremlin says it is now seeking to completely "liberate" Ukraine's breakaway Donbas where Russian-backed separatists broke away from Ukrainian government control in 2014. Around a third of the Donbas was held by the separatists before the Feb. 24 invasion. "This is a very brutal battle, very tough, perhaps one of the…
Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has expressed concerns that states are not coming forth with their counterpart funds to access the annual matching grant to develop their basic education system. The commission said it was particularly concerned that about N110 billion of the intervention funds accessed from UBEC were not utilised by states as of 2021 with the money left in the coffers of State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs). It has, however, earmarked N2 billion for the proposed national personnel audit of all basic education institutions in the country. Executive Secretary of UBEC, Hamid Bobboyi, disclosed the personnel audit…

The days-long battle for the industrial city has emerged as pivotal, with Russia focusing its offensive might in the hope of achieving one of its stated aims - to fully capture surrounding Luhansk province on behalf of Russian-speaking separatists. "We have to achieve a full deoccupation of our entire territory," Zelenskiy said by video link at an event hosted by Britain's Financial Times newspaper on Tuesday. Asked…
