Germany has started working on strengthening its basement shelters as well as building up crisis stocks in case of war, the Welt am Sonntag newspaper reported on Saturday, citing the country’s interior minister. After decades of attrition of Germany’s armed forces, Russia’s war in Ukraine has led to a major policy shift with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz pledging to increase defence spending and injecting 100 billion euros ($109 billion) into the army. The government is also looking into upgrading its public shelter systems and will increase spending on civil protection, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser told the newspaper. “There are currently…
Matthias Schmale, United Nations humanitarian coordinator for Nigeria, says up to $351 million is needed to provide humanitarian support for people in northeastern Nigeria. Schmale said this on Friday at an advocacy event held in Abuja on food security and nutrition in north-east Nigeria. He said 8.4 million Nigerians need humanitarian support, adding that the gap between people in need and people supported with food keeps widening due to reduced funding. “Across northeast Nigeria today, 8.4 million people need humanitarian assistance. Alarmingly, almost half of these crisis-affected people — 4.1 million — are expected to face the severe pain of…

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy denounced the missile strike on an eastern train station as another Russian war crime and said Ukraine expects a tough global response. “Like the massacres in Bucha, like many other Russian war crimes, the missile attack on Kramatorsk should be one of the charges at the tribunal that must be held,” he said during his nightly video address to the nation Friday. The president told Ukrainians that great efforts would be taken “to establish every minute of who did what,” so that those behind the attack would be held responsible. Zelenskyy said he spoke with EU…

President Muhammadu Buhari has written to the house of representatives seeking an increase in the 2022 budget deficit to be financed through borrowing from the domestic market. The president said the total budget deficit is projected to increase by N965.42 billion to N7.35 trillion, representing 3.99% of GDP. He said the incremental deficit will be financed by new borrowings from the domestic market. The Biden administration on Thursday announced it is levying sanctions against Russia’s largest military shipbuilding and diamond mining companies. The move blocks their access to the U.S. financial system as the United States looks to exact more economic pain on President Vladimir Putin for the invasion of Ukraine. Alrosa is the world’s largest diamond mining company and accounts for about 90% of Russia’s diamond mining capacity, according to the U.S. Treasury Department. Alrosa generated over $4.2 billion in revenue in 2021. Diamonds are one of Russia’s top 10 non-energy exports by value. The State Department also said it was blacklisting…
