Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar has noted with dismay the rate at which women engage in street begging which he said was against Islamic teachings.

He spoke at the graduation of 2,000 women trained on various skill and trades which was organized by Wife of Sokoto state Governor, Hajiya Mairo Tambuwal in collaboration with the Sokoto State Zakkat and Endowment Committee.

According to him, begging generate more harm than good in the society. He encouraged  women to be productive and desist from begging.

"Women are the pillars for societal development, thus they need to be encouraged and supported to be self-reliant so that they can contribute more to our development", he said.

The monarch added: "Empowering women is key to a better, peaceful and productive society."

While thanking wife of the Governor for initiating the programme, he called on the beneficiaries to utilize their acquired skills for the benefit of their households, immediate societies and the country at large.

Earlier, Mrs Tambuwal commended the Sultan for championing the course of women in the country.
