Oyo State government has been urged to as a matter of urgency involve more competent hands in the state health sector for effective service delivery.

Stakeholders in the health sector in the state that include Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI), representatives of Development Communications (DEVCOMS) Network, medical experts, media practitioners among others, made the appeal, during the NURHI 2 end of year 3 annual review meeting held, in Ibadan, the state capital.

Present at the event were the state Commissioner for Health, Azeez Adeduntan who was represented by Lanre Abass, NURHI Team Leader in the state, Mrs. Stella Akinso, NOA Director, Mrs. Dolapo Dosumu and Local Government Area Chairmen, among others.

Akinso while applauding the state government for what it has done so far, said there is an urgent need for the state government to involve more hands in the sector so as to fill the gap created by those who have retired and those who are no more in the service.

She said, "We need more hands in the health sector now. We want government to employ more people. There is an embargo on employment now but we want the government to lift the embargo. The shortage of personnel is giving way for the quackery to thrive. Many people have retired and many have left the service, they need to be replaced. There is also need to increase the budget of the heath sector".

Another contributor while speaking urged the state government to increase its budget and funding for the heath sector, stating that there is need to increase the heath budget most especially that for family planning.

Other speakers include representatives of DEVCOMS, media practitioners, among others, also charged the government to wake up and see to the needs of the people.

Adeduntan speaking through Abass, applauded NURHI and other development partners for their contributions to the various initiatives in the state health sector, assuring that the government would look at their observation and do the needful to take the health sector in the state to the next level.
