What was supposed to be a serious-toned letter from President Muhammadu Buhari to Senate, turned out to be a comic relief at the upper chamber on Wednesday.

Mr Buhari had written to the Senate about the ”Transmission of the Deep Offshore and Inland Basin Production Sharing Contracts Amendment Bill 2018”.

As is the custom, Senate President, Mr Bukola Saraki, read out the letter to lawmakers. As soon as he mentioned the first word, “transmission,” he and all the lawmakers burst into laughter.

It took a few moments for Saraki to compose himself and re-read the letter. “Let me start again,” he said trying to put on a serious face.

Even though his second attempt to read the letter caused more laughter, he, however, proceeded.

“Dear Distinguished Senate President,

“Transmission of the Deep Offshore and Inland Basin Production Sharing Contracts Amendment Bill 2018.

“I forward therewith the draft of deep off shore and inland basin production sharing contracts amendment bill 2018 for the kind consideration and passage by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. While hoping that the bill will receive the usual expeditious consideration and passage by the distinguished senate, please accept Mr Senate President the assurances of my highest regards.

“Yours Sincerely, Muhammadu Buhari,” the letter read.

Weeks ago, a video showing Inspector General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris, went viral with many ridiculing the top cop over the content of the short video.

In the video, Idris was seen struggling to read a speech at Police Technical Intelligence Unit in Kano. In the speech, he could be heard repeating lines and struggling to pronounce some words, one of which was the word, ‘Transmission’ which he repeated several times and which formed the centre of the lawmakers attempt at mirth during plenary on Wednesday.

Idris has been having running battles with senators over his refusal to honour their invitations to appear before lawmakers. They have twice declared a vote of no confidence in him and declared him unfit to hold public office.
