The Daily Trust newspaper has published an interesting feature story (May 15), on the sudden surge in the number of First Class degrees being churned out by Nigerian universities. Daily Trust reports that its investigation reveals that in the last five years, 16 Nigerian universities have produced a total of 3, 499 first class graduates. Between 2011 and 2016, 12 of these universities produced 2, 822 First Class graduates, and it seems this First Class galore is a growing fashion particularly among the private universities. This trend should ordinarily be a good thing: if Nigeria can manage to produce more…
If you are a Nigerian and you can be on social media, you have two immediate attributes: 1) You own at least one device 2) You are literate (at least to some extent) This means that you are not exactly hoi polloi. Recession permitting, you belong in a critical mass that can afford leisure and pleasure. Going to the beach or to a beer parlour to unwind and watch Arsenal struggle for their annual high achievement of number 4 is not beyond you. You can afford at least one nkwobi and one Gulder. You belong in the demographic which sustains…
Formal manners and titles aren’t elitist. They ensure respect for everyone. At the start of my teaching career, when I was fresh out of graduate school, I briefly considered trying to pass myself off as a cool professor. Luckily, I soon came to my senses and embraced my true identity as a young fogey. After one too many students called me by my first name and sent me email that resembled a drunken late-night Facebook post, I took a very fogeyish step. I began attaching a page on etiquette to every syllabus: basic rules for how to address teachers and…
I am a bit confused and somebody needs to talk to me now. Where exactly are we on the matter of the rechristening of Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, which happened last Tuesday at the Senate? Which, between these two names: ‘Acting President’ and ‘Coordinating President’ describes him in the current circumstance. I am seeking clarification because if others are forgiven, nobody will forgive an editor for using the wrong description for the head of state. And so, on my own, I had run through a lot of lexical entries to establish a definitional correlation between ‘coordinating’ and ‘acting’ and also find…
About a week before the United States presidential election last November, someone posted on Twitter that Hillary Clinton was at the center of a pedophilia ring. The rumor spread through social media, and a right-wing talk show host named Alex Jones repeatedly stated that she was involved in child abuse and that her campaign chairman, John Podesta, took part in satanic rituals. In a YouTube video (since removed), Jones referred to “all the children Hillary Clinton has personally murdered and chopped up and raped.” The video, posted four days before the election, was watched more than 400,000 times. Emails released…
It is truly cheering news that President Muhammadu Buhari met with the newly freed 82 Chibok girls last Sunday at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja, before flying to London for more medical attention. Freedom for the Chibok girls is a welcome interlude at this period of almost daily disturbing news. Our President is taking a well-deserve rest while his competent deputy, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, minds the shop. In 1986 when General Ibrahim Babangida travelled to Germany for medical attention for his radiculopathy, it was difficult to know who was really in charge between the Chief of Army Staff, General…
The Buhari’s re-election-obsessed associates are sure that even if Buhari remains in London till 2019 and he does not appear in the public one time to campaign, he would still win the election. Beyond the official hectoring about the need for the citizens to be sympathetic towards their sick president, pray for his recovery and not allow themselves to be co-opted on to a malignant campaign of gloating over his predicament is the contempt for the citizens’ expectations of good governance. This disdain is betrayed by President Muhammadu Buhari’s associates’ unvarnished interest in the next election at a time he…
I was uncomfortable when I read a statement credited to Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka calling on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to prosecute those he described as detractors in the fight against corruption in the country. Baba Soyinka reportedly made the call at the opening of his Vision of the Child Art Exhibition, 2017 edition, at Freedom Park, Lagos with the theme: ‘Enhance the Heritage; Advance the Future’. The exhibition itself was part of the events used to celebrate Lagos at 50. The Nobel Laureate was quoted by ThisDay of May 7, 2017, as saying: “When we talk…
I am not Igbo. I am proud of my Urhobo. However, as a student of history, I wish to show just what these great people came/come against and yet thrive. Okay, the incessant killings in the north will be glossed over so as to make this article not overly long. The civil war will also not be discussed. However, post-civil war, as I explained in my post “Minority report: the system is rigged against you”, the rich in Nigeria have major roots in the Indigenisation Decree of 1972 and 1977. I reminded people how the banks gave people of other…
In spite of spending over $20 billion in the last 20 years to fix its power challenges, Nigeria has continued its harvest of darkness in return. Only recently, electricity supply plummeed to all-time low for two days as low water levels at the hydro stations and challenges of gas supply hampered power generation. This prompted Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to outline six areas it would focus on going forward. The power sector in Nigeria has had eight ministers in five years, yet there is no end in sight to the perpetual darkness that Nigerians have been subjected to. According…
