It is cries of woe and unending agonies all over the place. Mothers running helter skelter as they camper into safety dragging their helpless children along with them. The images we see every day on our screens are distressing and the narratives that accompany such pictures are heart breaking. From Iraq to Yemen to Syria to Libya to Egypt to Pakistan and to the recurring Afghanistan is the same gory tale of bloodbath and bloodshed. Do people who created these unending agonies for mothers have mothers? Do the blood thirsty world leaders who torment mothers and children have mothers? Were…
President Muhammadu Buhari’s national broadcast, after 104-days of medical tourism, was as disappointing as it signaled a dangerous bend in government-citizen relationship that must be checked right away in the interest of both the administration and the country. It was curiously short in content and depth, merely skirting around many issues that agitate the minds of the citizens, and betrayed the conquistador mindset of the President, talking down on the citizenry in a manner reminiscent of the better-forgotten years of military rule, a significant part of which the president, admittedly, was. The speech was loud in silence on what ails…
“What’s that sound I am hearing?”“What sound?”“I thought I heard something like miaow, miaow…”“Oh my cats…oh yes…”“Are you now breeding cats?”“Not really. But I have just joined a group of concerned Nigerians who are planning to go to the Presidential Villa in Abuja to help sort out this issue of rats that invaded the President’s office and chased him out of his office as the BBC reported.”“You mean you believe that story?”“Nobody knows what to believe in this country anymore, but we are patriots, and Baba’s loyalists, and we are determined to make our own contribution. Why don’t you join…
President Muhammadu Buhari is back on the beat. For our country, it is great that both the President and Vice-President share common belief in the management of our country’s affairs. Imagine if it has been the other way round or if one of them is regarded, or is indeed, clueless and incompetent. The ship of state is not always a steady one, but it must be kept moving and it requires the steady hands of an able and competent captain all the time. Note that there were no congratulatory adverts in the media when Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo marked his 100th…
“Baba don come oh. Baba o yo yo, Baba Bubu o yo yo”“What is that?”“Eh, o yo yo”“If you are this excited about President Buhari’s return, then why didn’t you go to Abuja to welcome him when he arrived from England on Saturday.”“I didn’t have to”“After 104 days on medical vacation in London. You should have been there to show your loyalty, and your commitment to change.”“There were other people there. They serenaded Baba all the way from the airport to the Villa. That is how you know a popular leader.” “Don’t get over-excited, my friend. Those people were paid…
Fresh from his return from a 103-day stay in London, President Buhari waxed lyrical about national unity in his televised address to the nation. Nigeria’s unity, he said, “is settled and non-negotiable”. He apparently agreed on this with the late Ojukwu, and he thinks “majority of Nigerians” share this view. He has very strong words for Nigerians on social media who have crossed “the national red lines” by “daring to question our existence as a nation”. And, by the way, only the national assembly has the legal mandate to discuss these things. So there you have it. In a single…
Thank God the President is back, praying that God will perfect His healing in Jesus name. Reading through the presidential broadcast however, one cannot but express a sense of utter disappointment. This is a president who virtually sneaked out of Nigeria, who breached his own self declaration of transparency, by keeping Nigerians in the dark for over 100 days, and in that process grinding the wheel of progress of the nation. Notwithstanding that the president took Nigerians for granted, he was not impeached, but rather Nigerians were offering prayers for his recovery, daily, only for him to return with a…
Ruling Nigeria from abroad did not start yesterday. Not with Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and certainly not with Muhammadu Buhari. The nation heaved a sigh of relief on Saturday as the president touched the soil of his nation of birth. Staying and governing from London was the manure with which the farmer who sowed the seed of Nigeria nurtured it. Lord Lugard resigned as governor of Northern Nigeria in December 1905 because he failed to arm-twist his employers to allow him administer his colony from London. And his reason was a mixture of romantic craziness and the need to stay alive.…
Dear Mr President, Welcome back! We are all relieved to see that you look better than the last time you returned. Nigerians believe God is working in your life and for a purpose. Of course, many of us may interpret that purpose differently, but I think we are all united in believing that whatever the purpose, it can only be good for you and our country. While we await your national broadcast, I urge you to think deeply about yourself as a human being, your feelings for our nation, your love for her people and your belief in its great…
Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) commenced what it called a comprehensive, total and indefinite strike on Monday 14th August, 2017 to press home its demands that the government implements a series of agreements between both parties over the last few years. The strike action has led to paralysis across the nation's public universities, as reports suggest near-total compliance. Expectedly, the general public, especially parents and students, are agitated, given the possibility of a long shutdown and its attendant effects. Government on its part has made efforts to assure the public the strike would be short, as ministers of Labour…
