Last Saturday, March 27, 2021 the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) held its stakeholders’ meeting with media executives in Lagos. It has become characteristic of JAMB to hold such meetings since Is-haq Oloyede became its Registrar on August 1, 2016. Last year (2020), however, Covid-19 and the nationwide lockdown truncated the meeting. Usually, JAMB at this meeting with media executives expresses its gratitude “for the various supports, criticism, cautions and suggestions" on all its processes as well as "partnering with us in sanitizing the system”. One good thing about JAMB under the leadership of Oloyede is its openness, transparency,…

The selfishness at the heart of socialism

Hugo Gurdon Garry Kasparov, the former world chess champion, has commented that he was “enjoying the irony of … [Sen. Bernie] Sanders supporters lecturing me, a former Soviet citizen, on the glories of socialism and what it really means ... In practice, it corrodes not only the economy but the human spirit itself.” The soul-sapping nature of socialism was my subject last week, so I won’t go through the same stuff again, much though it bears repeating. Nevertheless, Kasparov’s comment led to further discussion of socialism after I reposted it on social media, and one respondent, a highly civilized left-wing…
Matt Lewis I became a conservative because I believed the conservative values I grew up with were the best way to bring about human flourishing for the most Americans. I still do. But in recent years it has become clear that significant parts of the conservative movement no longer share this belief (if they ever did). There is a palpable sense that not only are our values incapable of persuading a majority of Americans to support Republican politicians at the ballot box, but that the whole project of liberal democracy is doomed. What had been (in the days of Ronald…
When I wrote “Soname: Politics loss, the Church’s gain”, it was to celebrate a friend and “egbon”, Akinola Olumakinde Soname, on his investiture as the Lay President of the Methodist Church Diocese of Remo, Ogun State but little did I know that the write-up would catch the attention of “powerful” Methodist establishment people and generate an interest that would compel me to do more on the Methodist church. The story on Soname was well received as it went viral; and I received a call to do more, especially on the Methodist church in Remo in particular. The name of William…
Statesman and late President of Senegal from 1960 to 1981, Leopold Sedar Senghor, through his philosophy of negritude, believed that Africa and its culture had manifest contributions they can make to European thought. Same for Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana who fought vigorously to build an ideology he labeled “a New Africa, independent and absolutely free from imperialism.” In the same vein, musical colossus, Robert Nesta Marley, sang for the actualization of “Africa for Africans” and Tanzanian politician, political theorist and anti-colonial activist, Julius Nyerere, promoted a political philosophy he called Ujamaa. A Swahili word for 'extended family' or 'brotherhood,' the…
And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice ... Thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the time is come for thee to reap ~ Revelation 14:15. Introduction: Supernatural harvest talks of an increase that surpasses human understanding, an increase that is inexplicable and clearly beyond the natural. It is an increase orchestrated by supernatural input. Harvest time comes when the “corn” is ripe, by the mercy of God. Hence, supernatural harvest is a definite work of God’s grace, whereby all the enemies of harvest are beaten out by the power of the Holy Spirit.…
When I gave my life to Christ, some sins in my life disappeared immediately. However, most of my sins persisted. No matter how hard I tried, I could not overcome them. I would sin, repent, sin again, then repent again. This became a never-ending cycle and I was frustrated with myself. I am supposed to be a new creation in Christ Jesus, but the old creation would not leave me alone: “I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but…
I have just read Dare Babarinsa's typically disrespectful piece about Ilorin, which he titled "Ilorin and the crisis of identity". He actually should be pitied. This is because he made a futile effort to stroll the shores of the history of our people, with an arrogance that left little, for the manner that we, the Ilorin people, understand ourselves; who we are; our aspirations and what we make of our own history! When he started by describing Ilorin as a "Yoruba" city, he assumes that it's an uncontested fact, especially after he regaled his readers with the over-cited history of…
Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, is a Yoruba city. It is now in the throes of a self-inflicted crisis caused by the hijab, the head covering favoured by Muslim laity for their women folks. It is also loved by some Christians, especially the Catholics. It originated from the Middle-East where women are subjected to strict code of fashion. But in Yorubaland, fashion has never been a matter of contention. Now this. The case, I am told, is in the court. Some of the Muslims in Ilorin, apparently with the sympathy of the Governor, do not want to wait for…

My vaccination story - Azu Ishiekwene

It wasn’t planned. I was seeing off my neighbour and friend on Thursday evening when one of the officers of our estate residents’ association called out to me. He was in knickers and shirtsleeves, with his right hand clutching his left shoulder. “I’ve just been vaccinated,” he said. “Would you like me to put your name forward for it tomorrow?” After what I have seen in the last one year – Covid-19 related deaths first becoming statistics, and then statistics becoming people, and people having faces, and faces becoming friends and relatives – news of the discovery of vaccines was…
