Nigerians have elected a new leader to assume the office of the president on May 29. Bola Tinubu, candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), was declared winner of the presidential election Wednesday, extending the APC’s rule in Africa’s largest democracy. As he thanked his supporters, Tinubu appealed for reconciliation with his rivals, who are already demanding a cancellation of the poll which they said was marred by voter suppression and the failure of INEC to upload polling unit results from the over 176,000 polling stations to a web portal as stipulated in its guideline. In the election held…
Nigeria’s electoral commission, INEC, has acknowledged challenges that dented last Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections. Chairman of the commission, Mahmood Yakubu, at a meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioners on Saturday, acknowledged the challenges but said it would work harder to overcome them in the coming gubernatorial and States Houses of assembly elections scheduled for 11 March. The logistical challenge, which included late arrival of voting materials to polling units and failure of the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) machine to upload results of the election were widespread during the election last week, resulting in Nigerians questioning the credibility…
Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has scored the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) high in the conduct of the just concluded presidential and national assembly elections. Speaking on Channels TV on Saturday, Yakubu Maikyau, president of the NBA, said despite challenges, INEC performed well in the delivery of the elections. “I will say that the elections went well. Those who came out were happy to express their franchise,” Maikyau said. “There were challenges, definitely. There were some infractions, some of them actually constituted electoral offences but on the whole, I will score INEC as having performed maybe about 78, 80 percent…
A US senator representing Idaho, Jim Risch has asked the Joe Biden-led government to exercise restraint in embracing the just concluded presidential elections in Nigeria. The ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in a statementon Thursday said, “it is disappointing to see the administration rush to embrace the result while the full picture of what occurred during this electoral process is yet to be seen.” The ongoing electoral process in Nigeria is widely viewed as deeply flawed by election observers and many Nigerians, Risch said. On Wednesday, US Department of State spokesperson, Ned Price, congratulated Nigeria’s president-elect, Bola…
The court of appeal has granted leave to Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), to have access to all the sensitive materials used by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the conduct of the election held on February 25. The court also granted the same order to Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). A panel of the appellate court led by Joseph Ikyegh made the orders on Friday after the court heard two separate ex parte applications filed by the two aggrieved candidates and their political parties. On Wednesday, Mahmood Yakubu, chairperson…
Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Friday said it had constituted a legal team to defend the mandate given to the party and the president elect, Bola Tinubu. The campaign stated this while addressing a press conference in Abuja, saying it became necessary to respond to both the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar and the Labour Party, Peter Obi, following their separate press conferences which held on Thursday. Spokesperson of the Campaign, Festus Keyamo said he was part of the legal team of the ruling party. According to him, “As I am…
Seven state governments under the control of the Peoples Democratic Party have withdrawn their suit filed before the Supreme Court against the Federal Government challenging the results of the February 25 presidential and National Assembly elections. The states, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Taraba and Sokoto, discontinued the suit which had their attorneys-general as plaintiffs and the Attorney General of the Federation as the sole defendant. The states had in the originating summons marked, SC/CV/354/2023, sought an order of the apex court directing a wholistic review of all results so far announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission. They…
After a chaotically organised vote and messy count, Bola Tinubu, the candidate of Nigeria’s incumbent ruling party, has been declared winner of the closest presidential election in decades. Tinubu, a 70-year-old former governor of Lagos and longtime kingmaker in Nigerian politics, took 37% of the vote, the electoral commission said on March 1st. This placed him ahead of Atiku Abubakar (29%), a tycoon standing for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the main opposition, and Peter Obi (25%), a wildcard third-party candidate representing the Labour Party. Tinubu’s victory confounded most pollsters, who had put Obi well ahead in the race to…
Atiku Abubakar, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says the presidential election that produced Bola Tinubu as the president-elect was marred by “unprecedented fraud”. Abubakar who addressed a press conference in Abuja on Thursday said his “heart is full of sadness” following the election that was conducted on Saturday. He said the fraud that characterised the election must be challenged. He said the “dreams and aspirations of Nigerians who braced all the challenges to go and cast their votes were shattered by the conduct of INEC which failed to live up to expectations”. “The weekend election was neither free…
Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the statement by the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, that he won the 25 February presidential election as misleading, noting that the claim of the rigging of the poll was false. Spokesperson of the PCC, Festus Keyamo, in a statement on Thursday, said the claim by Obi is an attempt to delegitimise the mandate given to the president-elect, Bola Tinubu. Obi had during a press conference on Thursday claimed that he won the presidential election and would be challenging the outcome of the election in…
