Presidential Election Petitions Court has rejected the application for live transmission of proceedings as made by the petitioners in the court. In a unanimous ruling on the interlocutory applications, the five-member panel of justices held that the request hinges on policy decision which can only be made by the judiciary. Both the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar and the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, had separately argued that the live transmission of the proceedings had become necessary due to the public interest and concern generated by the outcome of the February 25 presidential election. In…
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it will call 100 witnesses to testify at the presidential election petition court. Atiku Abubakar, candidate of the PDP, had filed a suit challenging the election through which Bola Tinubu emerged as the president-elect. Addressing the court on Saturday, Chris Uche, counsel for Atiku Abubakar and the PDP, said all the parties met and agreed on the number of witnesses that would be presented and the duration. He said the PDP intends to call no more than 100 witnesses, adding that while seven weeks were given to call these witnesses, only three weeks will be…
The meeting between President-elect Bola Tinubu and Rabiu Kwankwaso, presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has continued to raise dust, especially among leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano. It would be recalled that Tinubu and Kwankwaso met for four hours in France, discussing a wide range of issues, including the possibility of the NNPP Presidential Candidate joining the incoming cabinet. Responding, Abdulmajid Kwamanda, an APC leader in Kano, said Tinubu must not give any appointment to Kwankwaso, not even that of a messenger. “We in the Northwest do not welcome Rabiu Kwankwaso to…
The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Friday adjourned indefinitely a suit seeking to stop Bola Tinubu from being sworn-in as president on 29 May. It comes barely 10 days to the scheduled swearing-in of the president-elect. Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) won Nigeria’s 25 February presidential election, defeating former vice president Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Labour Party’s Peter Obi. But a former presidential candidate of the defunct Hope Democratic Party (HDP), Ambrose Owuru, who claimed he was deprived of his victory in the 2019 election, filed a suit that asked for a court order to…
Presidential Election Petitions Court has fixed May 22 to rule on the modalities for the conduct of the main hearing in the petition by the Allied Peoples Movement (APM). Presiding justice of the court, Haruna Tsammani, on Thursday adjourned the petition of the APM on the date, which is also meant to hear agreements by parties on the number of witnesses and time to be allocated for their examination and cross-examination. Lawyers to the parties in the APM petition, INEC, APC, Tinubu, Shettima, and Kabiru Masari confirmed that they agreed not to object to any documents certified by INEC to…
National Chairman of Labour Party, Julius Abure, and three other national executive members, on Thursday, announced their return to the party secretariat. The development is coming one month after they were barred by Hamza Muazu of Federal High Court in Abuja from parading themselves as national officers of the party. The judge ruled that Abure; his National Secretary, Farouk Ibrahim; National Organising Secretary, Clement Ojukwu and one other, should no longer be given recognition as party executives. The order was granted in an ex parte application argued by James Ogwu Onoja, in which he informed the court the affected national…
The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has told the Presidential Election Petition Court in Abuja of his predicament in accessing electoral documents from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Obi, who came third in the February presidential election, is challenging the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Bola Tinubu. He alleged that INEC manipulated the presidential election in favour of Tinubu. At the resumed hearing of Mr Obi’s petition on Wednesday, his lawyer, Livy Uzoukwu, informed the five-member panel of the court led by Haruna Tsammani that INEC “stubbornly refused to produce…
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has asked the presidential election petition court (PEPC) to dismiss an application filed by the Labour Party (LP) and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, seeking to have the proceeding televised. Speaking with journalists after the tribunal pre-hearing session on Wednesday, Levy Ozoukwu, counsel to Obi and LP, said INEC opposed their application for a live broadcast. “Surprisingly, INEC is objecting,” the senior lawyer said. “A public institution that is being funded by the government and representing the people is saying they don’t want the people to enjoy live streaming. What are they hiding? “INEC sees…
Peoples Democratic Party and the Labour Party on Wednesday expressed anger over the telephone conversation between the United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken and the President-elect, Bola Tinubu. Blinken pledged stronger ties between the US and Nigeria during a 20-minute telephone call to Tinubu, who is in France. The US Department of State spokesperson, Matthew Miller, in a statement said Blinken spoke with the president-elect on Tuesday. The development came 24 hours after the Joe Biden administration announced the imposition of visa restrictions on Nigerians who allegedly disrupted the recently concluded elections. The US said the affected persons were…
President-elect Bola Tinubu has met with Rabiu Kwankwaso, one of his opponents in the February 25, 2023 elections. Kwankwaso, who ran on the platform of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), placed fourth in the election, winning only Kano State, a stronghold of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). According to sources, the duo met for hours in Paris, capital of France, on Monday. Tinubu reportedly told Kwankwaso to reach out to his political associates on the need to work together. The incoming president and his guest were said to have agreed to hold subsequent meetings. While Kwankwaso’s wife and…
