Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has asked Hudu Yunusa-Ari, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Adamawa, to stay away from its office in the state. The directive was conveyed in a letter on Monday signed by Rose Oriaran-Anthony, secretary to the commission. The REC had declared Aisha ‘Binani’ Dahiru, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as winner of the Adamawa state governorship election when results from 10 LGAs had not been announced. Oriaran-Anthony in the letter, said the administrative secretary has been asked to take full charge of the office in Adamawa with immediate effect. “I hereby convey the…
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately resume collation of Adamawa governorship election. INEC had suspended the process after the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) declared the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Aisha Binani as winner of the election. Atiku in a statement by Paul Ibe, his Media Adviser, therefore called on Nigerians to the “game plan of trying to up-turn the democratic wishes of the people of Adamawa State in the governorship election in the state.” Atiku said the initial decision of the Resident Electoral Commissioner…
Dino Melaye, a former senator, has been declared the winner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary election in Kogi state. Melaye secured 313 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Idoko Ilonah, who got 124 votes. Ahmed Makarfi, former governor of Kaduna and chairman of the PDP’s electoral committee for Kogi governorship primary, announced the result on Sunday. Melaye will face Ahmed Ododo, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the governorship election scheduled to take place on November 11. Last week, Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers, said Melaye does not have what it takes to be governor.…
The supplementary elections held in some states on Saturday were marred by violence, with four persons killed in Kano and Kebbi states, and pockets of violence and low turnout of voters recorded in other states. Apart from the killings in the two states, the exercise in Edo, Ekiti, Adamawa, Rivers and Anambra states was characterised by voter apathy, vote-buying and late arrival of election materials. This was just as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission announced the arrest of 12 persons in Kano and Katsina states for alleged involvement in vote-buying. Three persons were feared killed when thugs invaded the…
President-elect, Bola Tinubu, is currently taking a rest in Europe ahead of his inauguration on May 29, according to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Felix Morka, National Publicity Secretary of the ruling party, said this during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme. According to Morka, Tinubu is doing well and will swing into action immediately he returns from Europe. Morka stated, “He is probably in Europe. He’s fine. After the elections and all of the energy expended, he just decided to take a moment of rest. “Once he returns and is inaugurated on May 29, there will be…
Astha Rajvanshi, a Time’s reporter, has come under fire for writing the citation of Bola Tinubu, the president-elect of Nigeria, in the 2023 issue of the magazine’s 100 most influential people. In the report, Rajvanshi described Tinubu as a “longtime political power broker”, who has had nearly two decades to prepare for the presidential election. She said the former governor of Lagos is “aware of his inheritance” in the form of a “litany of crises in a fractured nation, including deep-rooted corruption, religious insurgencies, and shortages of cash, fuel, and power in a crumbling economy”. But at the release of…
Presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress, Bola Tinubu, says Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party could not have won the February 25 presidential poll because part of the votes he should have garnerned were taken by the candidates of Labour Party, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People’s Party, who were formerly members of Atiku’s party, the PDP. Tinubu made this assertion in his preliminary objection to Atiku’s petition, seeking the nullification of the result of the February 25 presidential election. Independent National Electoral Commission had declared that Tinubu won the election with 8,794,726 votes.…
All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday prayed the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) in Abuja to dismiss the petition filed by the PDP challenging the election of Bola Tinubu in the 25 February poll. APC, the 4th respondent, urged the PEPC to reject the petition in its notice of preliminary objection marked: CA/PEPC/A/05/2023. The party said that the court had no jurisdiction to adjudicate on the petitioners’ allegation predicated on ground (D) in paragraph 16 of the petition and the related paragraph 146 which lacks necessary facts or particulars as required by paragraph 4 (1)(d) of the rules of procedure…
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has told the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) that a candidate doesn’t have to secure 25 per cent votes in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja to be declared winner in a presidential election. This is as the electoral umpire has also submitted that neither the Electoral Act nor its guidelines contemplated electronic collation of results, transmission and uploading of electronic result as a condition precedent to the announcement of winner of the February 25 presidential election. It therefore said the return of Bola Tinubu, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of…
Chimamanda Adichie, a Nigerian novelist, says many Nigerians feel cheated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the 2023 presidential election. Speaking on Tuesday on Arise Television, Adichie said as far as Nigerians are concerned, INEC lost its credibility for failing to upload results immediately as promised. “I had been assured that technology would save us and we should also talk about how difficult it was to collect PVCs and how that in itself is a form of voter disenfranchisement,” she said. “We can’t see them (results) in real time. We cannot see them as Prof. Yakubu Mahmood said.…
