A British engineer says he is facing a Christmas away from his family after Nigeria was put on the travel red list. Oche Ameh is working in Lagos and was due to return home to Nottingham on 23 December to enjoy the festivities with his children. New rules mean he will now need to quarantine in a hotel for 10 days on arrival to the UK. Ameh said this would mean he would miss Christmas and New Year with his family, which was "heartbreaking". He said he has not yet broken the news to his children who will be "very…
The US says it is preparing "robust responses" over fears of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, after President Biden's rare talks with Vladimir Putin. In a video link, Biden voiced deep concerns over Russian troop build-ups and threatened "strong economic and other measures", Washington said. Russia says it will not attack Ukraine. Putin accused Kyiv of provocation, and sought guarantees against eastward Nato expansion and deployment of offensive weapons close to Russia. The talks began at 10:07 US Eastern time (15:07 GMT; 18:07 Moscow time), the White House said. They were held on a secure video link set up under…
The United Kingdom has released a new update on the processing of visa applications for countries on its red list. On Sunday, the British High Commission announced that it will “pause making decisions” on visitor visa applications from all red list countries, including Nigeria. The development came after the UK put Nigeria on its travel red list as a result of Covid Omicron cases linked to Nigeria. The ban, which took effect on Monday, means only UK residents or citizens can enter the country from Nigeria. According to the new update released on Monday, the UK said visa applications in…
Nigeria Association of Social Workers (NASoW) has called on federal, state and local governments to immediately deploy social workers to all educational institutions across the country. NASoW which is the umbrella body of professional social workers across the country, said this becomes necessary in order to stem the tide of bullying in schools in Nigeria. It would be recalled that five students of Dowen College, Lagos, were alleged to have bullied and beaten 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni, to a point of coma. The incident led to the eventual death of the student on November 30, 2021. However, NASoW in a statement…
As the world waits for studies that give a clear picture of the Omicron variant, early clinical data emerging from South Africa hint at a virus that may cause less severe cases of Covid-19. The South African Medical Research Council posted a report Saturday of the early experiences at several hospitals in Gauteng Province, where Omicron was first spotted in the country. Strikingly, most hospitalized patients who tested positive for Covid did not need supplemental oxygen. Few developed Covid pneumonia, few required high-level care, and fewer still were admitted to intensive care. Experts caution against reading too much into these…
The British High Commission says it will “pause making decisions” on visitor visa applications from all red list countries, including Nigeria. The decision was announced in a statement issued on Sunday by the commission. The development comes hours after the UK added Nigeria to its travel red list as a result of concerns over the Omicron Covid variant. Speaking in an interview on Saturday, Sajid Javid, the UK health secretary, had announced a temporary ban on foreign travellers from Nigeria, adding that “only UK residents or citizens of the UK can enter the UK from Nigeria from that point onwards,…
Federal Government on Sunday ruled out the possibility of restricting foreign travellers from visiting Nigeria despite travel bans on the country by Canada, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, Singapore and Hong Kong. This is just as the government stated that most of the in-bound passengers that tested positive for Covid-19 were from the UK. The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, said this on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ programme on Sunday. Ehanire described as unfortunate the knee-jerk reaction of some countries to the Omicron strain. He noted that even the World Health Organisation had said recently that countries should focus more on…
The Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa, established by Economic Community of West African States, says Boko Haram splinter group, Islamic State West Africa Province, moved about N18bn ($36m) generated from trading and taxing communities in the Lake Chad region through the Nigerian financial system annually. The group, set up by ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in 2000, stated that both Boko Haram and ISWAP had continued to mobilise, move and utilise funds through the nation’s formal financial and commercial system. It noted that the government lacked adequate insight into Boko Haram and ISWAP…
The United Kingdom says Nigeria will be added to the countries on its red list as a result of the discovery of Covid Omicron cases linked to Nigeria. Sajid Javid, the UK health secretary, disclosed this on Saturday in a television interview. The South Africa National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) had, on November 25, announced the discovery of 22 positive cases of the new Omicron variant. Following the discovery, a number of countries banned travel from countries in southern Africa. The UK had also placed a temporary ban on air travel from six southern African countries — South Africa,…
