Over 72.77 million active telecommunication subscribers have been barred from making calls on their SIMs, following a directive from the Federal Government to telecommunication companies. On Monday, the Federal Government ordered telecommunications companies to enforce compliance with its National Identification Number-Subscriber Identity Module policy by restricting outgoing calls on all unlinked lines as the deadline for the verification expired on March 31. This directive was contained in a joint statement signed by Director of Public Affairs of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Ikechukwu Adinde, and Head, Corporate Communications at the Nigeria Identity Management Commission, Kayode Adegoke. According to the statement, 125…
Chief Imam of Apo Legislative Quarters Mosque, Nuru Khalid, has been sacked for delivering a sermon that criticised the government over killings in Nigeria. The Imam was earlier suspended by the Steering Committee of the mosque on Saturday. But the chairman of the mosque committee, Saidu Dansadau, announced on Monday that Khalid’s suspension had been upgraded to sack. He said that Khalid was sacked for not being remorseful despite his suspension as the Imam of the mosque. This is despite the public outcry that Khalid should be reinstated. Khalid had, in his sermon, lambasted the government for its inability to…
Ukraine’s foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba said he spoke Monday with U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres about events in Bucha in what appear to be deliberate killings in the town on the outskirts of the capital Kyiv. “No place for Russia on the UN Human Rights Council,” Kuleba said on Twitter. “Ukraine will use all available UN mechanisms to collect evidence and hold Russian war criminals to account.” Videos and photos of streets in Bucha strewn with corpses of what appeared to be civilians, some with their hands tied behind their back, have led to global revulsion, calls for tougher sanctions,…
In both Hungary and Serbia, openly pro-Russian parties comfortably won legislative elections, providing Putin with a welcome reminder that despite the international community's firm and largely united response to the invasion, he does have some friends to his west. The most significant victory came in the form of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his nationalist Fidesz party winning a landslide. Hungary is a member of both the European Union and NATO, meaning Putin can claim to have a friend with seats at the top table of two of his most-hated institutions. On Sunday night, during his victory speech, Orban…
Two million people will start receiving about N20bn from June this year as basic cash transfers and conditional cash transfers under the National Cash Transfer Programme, the Federal Government has said. It was gathered that the Federal Government would pay the two million people N5,000 each under the basic cash transfer and an additional N5,000 under the conditional cash transfer. This implies that the government would be spending N20bn on the beneficiaries. A March 2022 document on the strategic roadmap and activities of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, obtained by our correspondent in Abuja…
The governor of a state so besieged by terrorists that he has asked residents to take up arms and defend themselves has described President Muhammadu Buhari as Nigeria’s best prescient ever. Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina has repeatedly lamented the security situation in his state, saying security agencies are overwhelmed and residents should take up arms to defend themselves. Nigeria operates a unitary security system with all the security agencies under the control of the Nigerian president. Thousands of people have been killed or kidnapped by terrorists, also called bandits, in Katsina and other Northwest states in the past few…
General overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Enoch Adeboye on Sunday disassociated himself from partisan politics. “I have said it before, and I will say it again, I am not and will never be a politician, I am a pastor – that is what God has called me to be,” Adeboye said at the April thanksgiving service. “Please do not distract me. My assignment is to be a pastor; to pray for you, to pray for nations, including Nigeria.” Adeboye’s reaction may not be unconnected to a recent circular by the RCCG for the creation of a…
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appeared in a video at the Grammy Awards asking for support in telling the story of Ukraine’s invasion by Russia. During the pre-recorded message that aired on the show Sunday night, he spoke in English, likening the attack to a deadly silence threatening to extinguish the dreams and lives of the Ukrainian people, including children. In his words: “Our musicians wear body armor instead of tuxedos. They sing to the wounded in hospitals, even to those who can’t hear them. But the music will break through anyway.” The Recording Academy, with its partner Global Citizen,…
An International Monetary Fund (IMF) official has warned that sanctions against Russia may dilute the U.S. dollar’s dominance. Gita Gopinath, IMF’s First Deputy Managing Director, told the Financial Times Friday that the sanctions have pushed Russia to seek assistance from other currencies. The increased use of other currencies, such as China’s renminbi, could lead to a more fragmented international monetary system. "The dollar would remain the major global currency even in that landscape, but fragmentation at a smaller level is certainly quite possible," Gopinth said. She noted that some countries have opened negotiations over the currency in which they pay…
Federal government has scrapped post-arrival PCR Covid-19 tests for fully vaccinated travellers entering Nigeria. According to a revised travel protocol released by the presidential steering committee (PSC) on Covid-19, fully vaccinated passengers are required to show evidence of “verifiable” vaccination certificate and permit to travel certificate. Boss Mustapha, PSC chairman, said passengers who are not able to show evidence of full vaccination will be treated as unvaccinated or partially vaccinated under the new protocol. He said the new measures will be effective from April 4. “In-bound passengers to Nigeria who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 are no longer required to…
