Nigeria's state oil firm, NNPC, has asked trading firms for emergency supplies of petrol to replace cargoes that were rejected because of their poor quality, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter said. Megacity Lagos and the capital Abuja face fuel shortages, and over the weekend, queues built up outside some petrol stations. NNPC was seeking about 500,000 tonnes of petrol, one of the sources added. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter. NNPC did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority said it…
House of Representatives’ Ad Hoc Committee on Unclaimed Funds in the Nigerian Commercial Banks and Infractions by the Central Bank of Nigeria has begun investigation of funds stuck in commercial banks due to the alleged failure to link accounts holding the funds to Bank Verification Numbers and the Treasury Single Account policy of the Federal Government. The committee is particularly probing the over 45 million accounts said to be holding funds amounting to over N1.2 trillion. The House had on January 26, 2022, resolved to set up the committee to investigate the “suspicious and unclaimed funds” sitting in various bank…
Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation, says federal government is working with the US on the “possible extradition” of Abba Kyari, suspended deputy commissioner of police (DCP). In July 2019, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had revealed how Kyari allegedly collaborated with Hushpuppi, a self-confessed international fraudster, to jail one of the latter’s associates, “after a dispute over a $1.1 million scam on Qatari business people”. The suspended police officer had, however, denied the allegation, claiming that his “hands are clean”. In August 2021, Usman Baba, inspector-general of police, received the report of a panel set up to probe the…
Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, says the Federal Government will bring back embattled Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho, to Nigeria after his prosecution in Benin Republic. The AGF spoke on Monday on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’. Declared wanted by the Department of State Services for allegedly stockpiling arms to destabilise Nigeria, an allegation he denied, Igboho escaped to the neighbouring francophone country in July 2021. However, luck ran out on him and he was arrested by the Interpol at a Benin airport when he tried to board a Germany-bound flight. He…
Federal government on Monday received two million doses of Johnson & Johnson (J&J) Covid-19 vaccines from the European Union. The delivery is part of a pledge by the European Union to distribute vaccines to some developing countries. Speaking at the handover ceremony in Abuja, Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Faisal Shuaib, said Nigeria had in 2021 procured 39,850,000 doses of Johnson and Johnson vaccine from the AFREXIM Bank through the African Union. Shuaib noted that with the donation of two million doses by the EU, the total doses of the brand of vaccines available…
Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, says Nigeria’s constitution allows Muslim women to wear hijab in line with the teachings of their faith. He noted that all citizens are allowed to practise their religions as long as no harm or inconvenience is caused to other people. He spoke at the National Mosque, Abuja, at a public lecture organised by the Coalition of Nigerian Muslim Women as part of activities marking this year’s World Hijab Day. Adamu, represented by Sidikat Shomope of the Social Mobilisation Department, Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), said it was unfortunate that the controversy over the wearing of…
Thousands of telecommunication subscribers nationwide seeking to retrieve their lost Subscriber Identity Module cards or acquire new lines temporarily have been left stranded, following a technical glitch in the National Identity Management Commission portal that has grounded SIM-related services. The affected NIMC portal enables telecom firms, Nigerian Immigration Service, banks and other organisations to verify the National Identity Number of their customers before attending to them, in line with the Federal Government’s directive. Following the directive by the Nigerian Communications Commission for the inclusion of NIN in the requirements for all new and existing SIM cards, telecom firms are required…
The Republic of Benin authorities have extended the detention of Yoruba separatist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, by six months. Yomi Aliyyu, Igboho’s counsel, disclosed this Sunday night. Aliyyu was quoted to have said Benin Republic renewed Ignoho’s incarceration despite that there was no criminal charge against him and no extradition request from the Nigerian Government. He said, “Contrary to what was speculated in the news by a lawyer, the government of the Republic de Benin has renewed the incarceration of Adeyemo for another six months even though there is no criminal charge in their file in Cotonou…
Leaders gathered at an African Union (AU) summit called on Saturday for the continent to have a bigger role on the international stage amid signs the bloc is struggling to forge a coordinated response to challenges from coups to Covid-19. The AU, formed 20 years ago to foster regional cooperation, has taken little decisive action in the face of six coups or attempted coups in Africa over the past 18 months, and the power grabs were high on the summit agenda. While the bloc did move to suspend Burkina Faso, Mali and Sudan following military takeovers, it is unclear whether…
Thousands of people demonstrated in Canadian cities, including the financial hub Toronto, on Saturday as mostly peaceful but noisy protests against vaccine mandates spread from Ottawa, the capital. The "Freedom Convoy" began as a movement against a Canadian vaccine requirement for cross-border truckers, but has turned into a rallying point against public health measures and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government. “We're all sick and tired of the mandates, of the intimidation, of living in one big prison,” said Robert, a Toronto protester who did not give his last name. "We just want to go back to normal without having to…
