A total of nine bodies have been recovered from the scene of a gas explosion that occurred in Kano state. On Tuesday, a gas explosion occurred near a primary school in Sabon Gari area of Kano metropolis, sending residents into panic. Speaking with journalists, Shuaibu Dikko, Kano commissioner of police, said efforts had commenced to rescue anyone who may be trapped under the rubble. Dikko said a gas cylinder from a welding shop nearby caused the explosion which brought down a building in the school, adding that it was not a bomb blast as speculated. Concerns grew on Wednesday for the welfare of more than 250 Ukrainian fighters who surrendered to Russian forces at the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol after weeks of desperate resistance. The surrender brought an end to the most devastating siege of Russia's war in Ukraine and allowed President Vladimir Putin to claim a rare victory in his faltering campaign, which many military analysts say has stalled. Buses left the steelworks late on Monday in a convoy escorted by Russian armoured vehicles. Five arrived in the Russian-held town of Novoazovsk, where Moscow said wounded fighters would be treated. Seven buses carrying Ukrainian…
Federal government says the Abuja-Kaduna train service will resume operations on May 23. Yakubu Mahmood, spokesperson, Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), said this in a statement on Monday. In March, the government suspended operations on the route after an attack on the train by gunmen. Eight passengers died in the attack, while many were kidnapped. Mahmood said the decision to resume operations does not mean efforts to secure the safe release of those abducted would be shelved. “The government wishes to assure the relatives of the abducted citizens still in captivity that the safe rescue of these passengers is a top…
Nigerian students, yesterday, made good their threats to cripple socio-economic actives in the country as they barricaded major highways and obstructed movements in continuation of their protest over ongoing nationwide strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). In 2020, the union embarked on a nine-month strike, the longest since 1999 and about two years later on February 14, it went on a four-week warning strike. It declared another eight weeks strike, saying it was giving the government more time to attend to its demands. Upon it expiration, it announced additional 12 weeks roll-over with effect from May 9,…
Ukraine's military said on Tuesday it was working to evacuate all remaining troops from their last stronghold in the besieged port of Mariupol, ceding control of the city to Russia after months of bombardment. The evacuation of hundreds of fighters, many wounded, to Russian-held towns, likely marked the end of the longest and bloodiest battle of the Ukraine war and a significant defeat for Ukraine. Mariupol is now in ruins after a Russian siege that Ukraine says killed tens of thousands of people in the city. With the rest of Mariupol firmly in Russian hands, hundreds of Ukrainian troops and…
Emmanuel Garba, Deborah’s father, in an interview with The PUNCH on Sunday, said he paid N120,000 to transport the remains of his daughter from Sokoto State to Niger State. Garba, who said he would not seek any legal redress, disclosed that the government had not contacted him despite the gruesome killing of her daughter. He stated, “I have yet to get a call or message from anyone concerning the incident. Nobody called me; I decided to go on my own. I went to the state CID (Criminal Investigation Department) office and begged them to help me get the corpse so…
Russia attacked positions in eastern Ukraine as it tries to encircle Ukrainian forces in the Donbas and fend off a counteroffensive around the city of Izium. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Russia's offensive in Donbas had stalled and Ukraine could win the war, an outcome few military analysts predicted at the outset of the conflict. "Russia's war in Ukraine is not going as Moscow had planned," Stoltenberg told reporters on Sunday. In a strategic blow for Russia, which has long opposed NATO expansion, Finland on Sunday confirmed it would apply to join the Atlantic military alliance. Sweden's ruling Social Democrats…
Sokoto state has declared an immediate 24-hour curfew to quell protests demanding the release of suspects in the killing of Deborah Samuel last week, a statement from the governor's office said. On Thursday, Samuel was beaten and burned by fellow students for alleged blasphemous statements about the Prophet Mohammad in a Whatsapp group. Two suspects were arrested. The curfew applies to the state capital Sokoto. Nigeria is almost evenly divided between the largely Christian south and mainly Muslim north, where some states have adopted strict sharia laws, including death sentences for blasphemy. A city resident witness described the protesters as…
Kaduna government has banned protests related to religious activity in the state. Samuel Aruwan, commissioner for internal security, said the ban became imperative “in view of moves by some unpatriotic elements to organise series of for-and-against protests related to a security development in one of the northern states”. The ban comes in the wake of unrest in Sokoto state over the arrest of the suspected killers of Deborah Samuel, a female student of Shehu Shagari College of Education. A mob killed Deborah over alleged blasphemy on Thursday. Her killing had sparked outrage and condemnation across the country, with Nigerians asking…
