Hiring talent is the hardest thing a manager does. Period. I thought I’d cracked the code on this process about a decade ago by conducting multiple interviews, sharing a dinner with front runners, calling references not provided. And yet, my odds of success were about the same as roulette. Hiring and keeping talent was challenging even before Covid led to millions of people leaving their jobs or the workforce. That reality only increased during the last two years, with company culture playing an important role in whether to stay or go. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than…
Clearing agents and freight forwarders have decried over 3,000 imported vehicles trapped at the Tin-Can Island Ports Complex, Apapa, due to the collapse of the National Vehicle Registration (VReg) platform created by the Federal Ministry of Finance (FMoF) for imported vehicles. The clearing agents lamented the daily rising costs incurred from demurrages arising from several imported vehicles trapped at the various terminals in the port as they were unable to clear them over breakdown of Vreg platform. They said that VReg platform, which was created by the Federal Ministry of Finance (FMoF) for imported vehicles in 2021 became mandatory and…
You've been approached about buying a business. What do you do first? The demographics tell an exciting story: we're likely to see hundreds of thousands of small owners looking to retire over the next decade. Does the big question then become what will happen to all those companies? One possibility is that we might see a boom in opportunities for younger people to acquire those businesses. Maybe you even work in a company like this where the owner has already approached you about taking over. While that might seem like a dream come true--to finally own your own business--there's also…

As an empathetic leader, I couldn’t help but cringe when I read how Better.com let go of 900 employees…over Zoom. Not only is this a PR nightmare. It can drain morale and create a toxic work environment. But, could it get any worse? Well, here’s what an employee, who wasn’t fired, had to say about the experience to Business Insider. “You’re the lucky ones,” CEO Vishal Garg told them. “Garg…

Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria, the local division of London-headquartered multinational banking and financial services firm Standard Chartered Plc, is discontinuing operation of around 50 per cent of branches in Nigeria, a step targeting prioritisation of digital banking, Bloomberg reported Monday, citing insiders. The closure teed off in December, which means just 13 branches of the bank will be up and running ultimately, compared to around 25 operating before the move, according to the news outlet. Lenders are deploying mobile money services on a vast scale in Nigeria to tap the market of the unbanked population comprising approximately 38 million adults,…
Every business leader needs help generating engagement, loyalty, and bottom-line success. Every business leader I know struggles with the challenges of leadership, and is constantly honing their formula for success. We all wish it could be boiled down to a short list of actions, but we continue to be surprised and frustrated by new situations that seem to be beyond our thinking. Thus, ever after years as an executive in IBM and other companies, I'm still looking for the magic. I was impressed by a recent book, "The Leadership Star," by Brian Hartzer, an experienced business executive, offering a concise…
Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of Ondo state, says the southwest region is losing N2.5 billion daily to the consumption of beef. Beef is meat from cattle. Proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) had recently banned the consumption of beef and the keeping of cows in the southeast. Speaking at a meeting with stakeholders in the state’s education sector in Akure, Ondo capital city, Akeredolu said people in the south-west should consider using chicken meat for their ceremonies. Represented by Akin Olotu, his special adviser on agriculture, the governor said chicken meat is healthier than beef, and that it will enhance the…
Everyone deserves kindness--even the employee who drives you nuts. Being friends with your direct reports can cause problems. You need to treat everyone fairly, and if you're besties with one employee and not others, you can be biased. And even if you're perfectly fair, you still look biased, which isn't good for morale. But, what can you be if you aren't friends with your direct reports? A fifth-grade teacher gave her students these instructions: You can't be best friends with everyone but you can notice everyone be friendly to everyone make room for everyone root for everyone empathize with everyone…
