Science and Technology

• Toyota, Sharp, and NEDO have teamed up to manufacture a unique car that could "run forever", according to Bloomberg. • There have been promising advances in developing thin enough solar panels for curved surfaces, as well as in tech for charging vehicles while they're in motion. • The solar cells the companies are working on attaching to the car are only 0.03 mm thick, so they can be attached to curved areas on cars like the roof, the hood, or the hatchback. • By pairing more efficient solar cells with high-capacity batteries to keep vehicles running at night, solar…
Two astronomers from University of Cambridge and University of Columbia have proposed a plan as an alternative for an elevator between the moon and Earth. According to their study, existing materials such as Zylon, a polymer carbon, would allow us to build a tower or cable between the moon and Earth. The researchers also suggested the cable could be the thickness of a pencil lead and could cost "billions" of dollars. Have you ever thought about what it would be like if we could just hop in an elevator, press a button, and head up to the moon? While it…
Expanding waistlines are a major mid-life bugbear for many people as that expensive wedding outfit gets a bit tighter each time. Now, scientists believe they have pinpointed the primary culprit - and it's not the dry cleaner. They have found that the average person gains 20 per cent in weight during their adult life, assuming food intake, exercise and other weight-related factors remain constant. The weight gain, which can be offset by eating less and exercising more, occurs because the fat cells becomes less effective at removing accumulated fat, a new study finds. It's all about the fat cells Fat…
In 1950, just two years after the state of Israel was founded, the country’s first commercial delegation set off for South America. Israel desperately needed trading partners. Unlike its Arab adversaries, Israel did not have natural resources to fund its economy. There was no oil or minerals. Nothing. The delegation held a couple of meetings but was mostly met with laughs. The Israelis were trying to sell oranges, kerosene stove tops and fake teeth. For countries like Argentina, which grew its own oranges and was connected to the electrical grid, the products were pretty useless. It’s hard to imagine this…

Facebook ‘knows when App users have had sex’

Intimate data, including when people have had sex, is being shared with Facebook, a study from Privacy International has suggested. PI studied a range of period-tracking apps to see exactly what information was shared with the social network. It included details such as what contraception was used, when periods were due and the type of symptoms experienced. Since the investigation, one app said it was changing its privacy policies. Menstruation apps collect some of the most intimate data imaginable - from general health, to information about sex, moods, what the user eats, drinks and even what sanitary products she uses.…

Facebook says it may remove Like counts

Facebook could soon start hiding the Like counter on News Feed posts to protect users’ from envy and dissuade them from self-censorship. Instagram is already testing this in 7 countries including Canada and Brazil, showing a post’s audience just a few names of mutual friends who’ve Liked it instead of the total number. The idea is to prevent users from destructively comparing themselves to others and potentially feeing inadequate if their posts don’t get as many Likes. It could also stop users from deleting posts they think aren’t getting enough Likes or not sharing in the first place. Reverse engineering…
Telegram will roll out an update designed to protect Hong Kong protesters' identities in the coming days, according to Reuters. The upcoming feature will cloak users' phone numbers to prevent authorities from being able to look up the people participating in protesters' group chats. Telegram's security-focused features made it the go-to chat application for activists around the world. Hong Kong protesters are using it to share information on where they're holding demonstrations, to pass around the access codes of buildings where they can hide and to make sure fellow activists know the identities of undercover cops. Telegram founder Pavel Durov…
If you, like millions of other people, use the same password for just about every application you use, then I’m sorry to break it to you, but one of these days, you’ll probably get hacked, if you aren’t already. Although you probably imagine a hacker as a hooded, geeky man sat behind a laptop breaking into accounts by guessing people’s favorite movies and lucky numbers, surprisingly, that’s not how it works. In fact, hackers specifically target vulnerable sites and access its customer database where they can easily find your details. But, we’re not here to scare you (that much), we’ve…
