Gunmen have killed five police officers and a couple identified as Mr and Mrs Nwagu during an attack at Okpala community in Ngor-Okpala LGA, Imo state.

The incident occurred on Friday around 8 am.

A witness who did not want to be named said the police officers were attacked at a restaurant.

He said the gunmen also killed the Nwagus, who were the owners of the restaurant.

According to the witness, the gunmen carted away the police officers’ rifles after the attack.

A viral video on social media shows the lifeless bodies of the police officers on the ground as residents of the community scamper for safety.

Henry Okoye, Imo police spokesperson, confirmed the killings, noting that a team of officers has been deployed to the area.

Okoye said the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at a mortuary.

The attack on the police officer was not the first by gunmen in Imo state.

Some days ago, Augustine Ukaegbu, an inspector of police, was killed by gunmen in Umuoshike Ogbor, Aboh-Mbaise LGA of the state.

In March, three officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were feared dead following an ambush in Obiangwu community, Ngor-Okpala LGA.

In January, Chinyere Obialor, a female police officer, was killed by gunmen.
