Funminiyi Afuye, speaker of the Ekiti state house of assembly, is dead.

The speaker’s death was confirmed on Wednesday in a statement issued by Yinka Oyebode, chief press secretary to the Ekiti governor.

According to the statement, before he died, the 66-year-old Afuye was receiving treatment after suffering cardiac arrest.

“The Government of Ekiti State regrets to announce the death of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Funminiyi Afuye,” the statement reads.

“Afuye died Wednesday evening at the Ekiti State Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado- Ekiti, where he was receiving treatment after suffering a cardiac arrest.

“The late Afuye, 66, was a former Commissioner, Ekiti State Ministry of Information, and two-time member of the State Assembly.

“He was inaugurated Speaker of the sixth Assembly on June 6, 2019.”

Afuye is said to have died days before his daughter’s wedding.

Meanwhile, his death comes hours after he accompanied Biodun Oyebanji, governor of Ekiti, to inspect a bad portion of the Basiri road in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

Oyebanji, who was sworn into office as governor of Ekiti on Sunday, inspected the Basiri road on Tuesday.
