POLITICS

Farida Jalalzai & Meg Rincker Worldwide, 1 in 10 presidents and prime ministers has relatives who were already in politics. Europe and Latin America, both democratic regions, have the highest proportion of leaders who come from political families. Want to get into politics? It helps if you come from the right family. Our study, published in the journal Historical Social Research in December 2018, shows that, on average, one in 10 world leaders comes from households with political ties. We examined the backgrounds of 1,029 political executives – that is, presidents and prime ministers – in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, Europe,…
West African regional bloc ECOWAS said on Thursday it has recognised Umaro Sissoco Embalo as the winner of Guinea-Bissau’s presidential election in an attempt to draw a line under a four-month dispute over the results. The national electoral commission repeatedly declared former army general and prime minister Sissoco the winner of the Dec. 29 run-off vote, and outgoing President Jose Mario Vaz handed over power to him in an inaugural ceremony in February. But ECOWAS said days later that Embalo’s inauguration had taken place “outside legal and constitutional frameworks” as runner-up Domingos Simoes Pereira continued to challenge the results before…
Former US President, Mr Barack Obama offered his formal endorsement of Joe Biden on Tuesday, injecting himself squarely in the presidential race for the first time by urging Democrats across the party's ideological spectrum to rally behind Biden and form a unified front to defeat President Donald Trump and win back the White House. Obama, in a lengthy video taped on Monday and posted on Tuesday, lauds Biden's character and resilience, touting him as the right kind of candidate to lead the country through a crisis like the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Obama also highlights the stakes of the 2020 election…
Bernie Sanders endorsed Joe Biden’s presidential campaign on Monday, encouraging his progressive supporters to rally behind the presumptive Democratic nominee in an urgent bid to defeat President Donald Trump. “I am asking all Americans, I’m asking every Democrat, I’m asking every independent, I’m asking a lot of Republicans, to come together in this campaign to support your candidacy, which I endorse,” the Vermont senator said in a virtual event with Biden. The backing came less than a week after Sanders ended his presidential campaign, which was centered around progressive policies such as universal health care. There were early signs that…
Barring unforeseen disaster, Joe Biden will represent the Democratic Party against President Donald Trump this fall, the former vice president’s place on the general election ballot cemented Wednesday by Bernie Sanders’ decision to end his campaign. Biden likely won’t secure the number of delegates needed to clinch the nomination until June. But without any Democratic rivals left, a general election campaign that will almost certainly be the most expensive and among the nastiest in U.S. history is underway. “It won’t be easy. Nobody’s confused about that. But we are ready for the general election. We are ready for our standard-bearer,”…
Failure to provide enough protective equipment for frontline workers and delays over testing have been "serious mistakes" in tackling coronavirus, the new Labour Party leader has said. Mr. Keir Starmer said in an article in the Sunday Times, that ministers took too long to explain why they were "so far behind" on testing. He also called for a "national vaccine programme" against the virus. And he said ministers should publish an "exit strategy" to end the lockdown. The 57-year-old decisively won the contest to succeed Jeremy Corbyn on Saturday, defeating Lisa Nandy and Rebecca Long-Bailey in a ballot of party…
Supreme Court, on Friday, dismissed an application asking it to review its judgement which nullified the victory of the candidates of All Progressive Congress (APC) in the 2019 general elections in Zamfara State. With one out of seven justices dissenting, the court, led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mr Tanko Mohammed, held that the application by APC was an abuse of court process. The fresh application before the apex court was brought by a faction of APC led by a former governor of the state, Abdulaziz Yari. The Supreme Court had, on May 24, 2019, ruled that the APC…

Digital myths and political reality

First it was Steve Bannon; then Jared Kushner; now it is Brad Parscale. Ever since Donald Trump began persuading millions of Americans to support him while behaving as no successful politician ever had, mainstream commentators have looked for the evil genius pulling his strings. Messrs Bannon and Kushner were both auditioned for the part, but rejected, after achieving little in office besides notoriety. Now, as Mr Trump’s re-election campaign starts going full tilt, Mr Parscale is being considered. Tremulous profiles of the Trump campaign’s manager are the latest thing in political reporting. They typically start by noting his intimidating height,…
The crisis rocking All Progressives Congress (APC), got messier, yesterday as the Abuja division of the Court of Appeal stayed the execution of the ruling of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) suspension of Mr Adams Oshiomole. It came even as a Federal Capital Territory High Court granted an interim order allowing Mr Victor Giadom, acting national secretary, leave to act as national chairman. In a bench ruling delivered by a three-man panelof the appellate court led by Mr Abubakar Yahaya, yesterday, the court ordered a stay of execution of the FCT high court’s order. A panel…
A revolt by some governors of All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday led to the postponement of the controversial National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party. The aggrieved governors took on the Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF), Kebbi State Governor Atiku Bagudu for issuing an illegal resolution to remove APC National Chairman, Mr Adams Oshiomhole. They declared that the NEC meeting was illegally convened, vowing not to attend it or allow it to hold. They urged Bagudu to lead them to President Muhammadu Buhari having resolved that the NEC meeting should not hold because it was illegally…
