Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, on Monday, backed the disqualification of Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, from contesting All Progressives Congress governorship primary scheduled to hold on June 22. During a media parley to mark Democracy Day, Ganduje said the political crisis in Edo politics “is normal in any democratic dispensation”, adding that “APC is being conscious of the legal implications that may follow after the elections”. APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, after a meeting of the National Working Committee, said NWC members were unanimous in their decision to disqualify the Edo State governor. Ganduje said, “Other political parties…

Obaseki meets Wike in Port Harcourt

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki today visited his Rivers state counterpart Nyesom Wike, at the government house in Port Harcourt. It is not yet clear the reason for the visit but political analysts say it will not be unconnected with the alleged planned defection of the Edo governor from the All Progressive Congress (APC) party. The embattled Edo governor was last week given a shocker by his party which disqualified him from participating in the party primaries. Sun
Burundi’s constitutional court has agreed that president-elect, Mr Evariste Ndayishimiye should be sworn in immediately after the death of former leader Pierre Nkurunziza, the government said on Friday. The constitution provides for the speaker of parliament to take over in such a situation. The court ruled, however, that “the interim period is not necessary and that...Ndayishimiye must be sworn in as soon as possible”, the government said in a statement posted on Twitter. There had been uncertainty as to who was in charge in Bujumbura since the government announced Nkurunziza’s death on Tuesday. Watchers of the country had worried about…
Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has said that he would not appeal his unjust disqualification by the Governorship Primary Screening Committee of All ProgoCongress (APC), noting that the action is ‘a mockery of the democratic process.’ In a statement, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr Crusoe Osagie, said, “We have watched the mockery of democratic process, which Mr Adams Oshiomhole, is administering and superintending over in our great party the All Progressives Congress (APC). It has been an unfortunate, disheartening and dreadful spectacle. “We had initially asserted that going by the open display and…

Independent candidates who are not affiliated to any political party can stand in national and provincial elections, South Africa's highest court has ruled. Mr Mbuyiseli Madlanga of the Constitutional Court said in his judgement that the current electoral act banning independent candidates was unconstitutional and there was no justification for the limitation. Bongani Bongo, who chairs the parliamentary committee responsible for the Electoral Commission, said parliament was studying the judgement. Pule Mabe, a spokesman for African National Congress which…
A federal high court sitting in Abuja has affirmed the deregistration of 32 political parties by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The court, in a judgment delivered on Thursday, dismissed the suit filed by the parties against INEC on the grounds that they failed to prove their case. INEC chairman, Mr Mahmood Yakubu, on February 6, 2020, deregistered 74 political parties. He said they failed to meet the criteria provided for by section 225A of the 1999 constitution (as amended). This include: “Failure to win at least 25 percent of the votes cast in one state in a presidential…
