Football clubs across the world splashed out a record $6.37 billion on players during 2017 with English teams again the biggest spenders, FIFA’s Global Transfer Market Report said. The total paid out was about 33 percent more than in 2016 as English clubs led the way with a net spend of $988 million on squad improvement. Deals such as Romelu Lukaku’s 75 million-pound move from Everton to Manchester United and Alvaro Morata’s 60 million-pound switch from Real Madrid to Chelsea put English teams at the top of the list. But those individual deals were eclipsed by Brazilian forward Neymar’s move…
As Roger Federer cried while accepting his 20th Grand Slam title, Rod "Rocket" Laver took a chance to snap a picture for posterity. Federer has won more major singles titles than any man, including a record-equaling six on the court that bears the great Rod Laver's name at Melbourne Park. This one, following a tension-filled, momentum-swinging 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win over Marin Cilic in Sunday's Australian Open final, was a keeper. Laver has been involved in the on-court presentations in the past, witnessing Federer's tears at close range. This time, the 79-year-old Laver - the only man…

Tiger Woods brought big crowds back to golf, and he even produced a few big roars. In his first PGA Tour event in a year because of a fourth back surgery, Woods mixed a few mistakes with a few shots that looked familiar Thursday on his way to an even-par 72 in the opening round of the Farmers Insurance Open. "It was fun to compete again. It was fun to be out there," Woods said. But he was seven shots behind Tony Finau, who led with a 65 on the North Course at Torrey Pines, and Woods will play that…
A brilliant second-half display has earned home-based Super Eagles team a place in the quarterfinals of ongoing African Nations Championships, CHAN taking place in Morocco. Against the run of play, Nsi Eyama headed Equatorial Guinea into the lead in 40th minute and they held that advantage till the end of the first half. In the second half, the Super Eagles stepped up their game and just before the hour-mark, Anthony Okpotu levelled score for Nigeria through a stunning header…
U.S. Tennis Association says Serena Williams will return to competition for the first time in more than a year at the country's Fed Cup matches against the Netherlands next month. She was pregnant during that tournament and gave birth to a daughter on Sept. 1. Joining Williams on U.S. captain Kathy Rinaldi's roster announced Tuesday is older sister Venus, a seven-time major champion. The siblings have not played on the Fed Cup team together in three years. Also…

Alex Iwobi got his name on the scoresheet in Arsenal’s 4- 1 victory over Crystal Palace in Saturday’s English Premier League encounter. The Gunners went on a 22-minute rampage in the first half, scoring all their four goals against the Eagles within that period. Nacho Monreal opened the scoring for Arsene Wenger’s men four minutes after the kick-off when he headed home Granit Xhaka’s corner kick. Iwobi doubled the lead in the sixth minute when he fired in from close range after previously forcing a safe from goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey. Laurent Koscielny increased the scoreline after benefiting from another shambolic…
Victor Moses found the back of the net for the first time this season as Chelsea hammered Brighton and Hove Albion 4-0 in Saturday’s English Premier League tie.
