Mixed Feelings about the Dapchi Schoolgirls' ‘Rescue’ - Farooq Kperogi

Daily Trust reported that 5 hours before the return of the Dapchi schoolgirls, soldiers guarding the town of Dapchi were mysteriously withdrawn. Recall that the Yobe State governor had alerted the world to the fact that soldiers were also withdrawn hours before the abduction of the girls. And Amnesty International said a few days ago that Nigerian military authorities willfully ignored credible intelligence about the abduction.

Add this to the recent BBC report that "orders from above" stopped foot soldiers on the front lines from capturing Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau and you will be left in no doubt that some people somewhere in the corridors of power are clearly monkeying with the lives of innocent schoolgirls and profiting from terrorism. This both saddens and angers me.

I have three daughters, including a teenage daughter who would attend the school the Dapchi girls were abducted from if I were to live in Dapchi, and can't imagine the unspeakable horrors the parents of the abducted girls have had to live with.

While I rejoice with the parents who have reunited with their daughters, let's remember that 36 girls are still missing, according to Information Minister Lai Mohammed. I've also just read that 5 of the girls have died in captivity. A Daily Trust video today showed one of the freed schoolgirls saying that she personally knew two of the 5 girls that have died. This is tragic.
