The UK ambassador to Iran was arrested during anti-government protests in Tehran after officials admitted shooting down a passenger plane. Rob Macaire was held for three hours, in what the UK described as a "flagrant violation of international law". It is understood he was attending a vigil for those who died in the crash, which turned into a protest. He left to make his way back to the UK embassy, but was arrested as he stopped at a barber shop for a haircut. In a statement, UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said: "The arrest of our Ambassador in Tehran without…

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, said this in a message sent to The PUNCH on Saturday. Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has suspended the use of National Identification Number for registration for the 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination UTME. Registrar of JAMB, Mr Ishaq Oloyede, who stated this while briefing journalists in Abuja on Saturday, said the move was to provide more time for candidates to get their national identification numbers. He said the suspension was also to address the technical challenges experienced at some centres. He asked candidates to disregard the use of NIN for the 2020 registration and strictly comply with other procedures for the registration. He however said that JAMB will consider…
Iran announced Saturday that its military ‘unintentionally’ shot down a Ukrainian jetliner, killing all 176 aboard. The statement came Saturday morning and blamed “human error” for the shootdown. The jetliner, a Boeing 737 operated by Ukrainian International Airlines, went down on the outskirts of Tehran during takeoff just hours after Iran launched a barrage of missiles at U.S. forces. Iran had denied for several days that a missile downed the aircraft. But then the U.S. and Canada, citing intelligence, said they believe Iran shot down the aircraft. The plane, en route to the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, was carrying 167…

Katsina State Governor Aminu Masari says the state has 996,000 out-of-school children. Quoting the statistics from a United Nations report while fielding questions from journalists on Friday, the governor, however, said most of the affected children were not Nigerians. “Since they are now in Nigeria, they become part of our responsibility, and the government is doing what it can to make sure that it addresses the issue of Almajiris roaming the streets.” The governor also said the state would incorporate Qur’anic education system into the school feeding programme as part of measures to integrate the system into western education. Buhari meets ASUU, insists on IPPIS

Federal Government defended its Integrated Personnel and Information System on Thursday, insisting that the policy had come to stay. This came as President Muhammadu Buhari met with leadership of Academic Staff Union of Universities and urged the lecturers to embrace IPPIS with a promise to increase university funding. This, he said, would complement efforts being made to resolve the union’s face-off with the government over IPPIS. The government said at the meeting that up to 70 per cent of university lecturers had already enrolled in the system, arguing that it was an indication of its acceptance by the majority of…
