ASUU’s strike is illegal - FG

Federal Government has declared that the two weeks warning strike embarked upon by Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is illegal. This is even as it also declared that employee cannot dictate to the employer. Minister of Labour and Employment, Mr Chris Ngige stated this while briefing State House correspondents at the end of Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting. The meeting was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja. Ngige said contrary to International Labour Organization (ILO) convention, ASUU failed to give the mandatory notice to the government before embarking on strike. “They didn’t…
US President Donald Trump has announced sweeping new travel restrictions on Europe in a bid to combat the spread of the coronavirus. In a televised address on Wednesday, he said all travel from Europe would be suspended for the next 30 days. But he said the "strong but necessary" restrictions would not apply to the UK, where 460 cases of the virus have now been confirmed. There are 1,135 confirmed cases of the virus across the US, with 38 deaths. "To keep new cases from entering our shores, we will be suspending all travel from Europe," Mr Trump said. "The…

Buhari writes Senate on new 7.5% VAT, others

President Muhammadu Buhari has written to Senate seeking amendments to the Finance Act recently passed by the National Assembly. His message was conveyed in a letter read out by Senate President, Mr Ahmad Lawan, at the start of plenary on Tuesday. One of the amendments sought by the president is that the new law should take effect from February 1. Except where lawmakers expressly state in their proposal, new laws usually come into effect as they are signed by the president. Senate passed the Finance Bill in November 2019 and it was signed into law by the president on January…
Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has summoned an emergency meeting with first class traditional rulers of the state. The governor summoned the meeting to fashion out how to address the accommodation for and upkeep of the deposed Emir of Kano, Mr Muhammadu Sanusi II. After his deposition, Sanusi was taken to Loko in Nasarawa state. Loko is a border town between Nasarawa and Benue States. The deposition script handed down by Kano state government would have had Sanusi spend the rest of his days in Loko community. With its harsh weather, bad roads, lack of electricity and susceptibility to…
The legal team of the deposed Emir Sanusi of Kano led by Mr Abubakar Mahmoud has said it would challenge the banishment and detention of Mr Sanusi to Loko local government in Nasarawa State. While Mahmoud said his team would do this because it is “illegal, unconstitutional and a clear abuse of power,” he said Sanusi had not given them any directive to challenge his dethronement in court. Kano State government, through the managing director of Kano Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA), Mr Bappa Dan’agundi, had Tuesday morning said the Emir’s banishment was in line with tradition and for peace to…
Kaduna State Government has announced the appointment of Mr Muhammadu Sanusi II, who was deposed as emir of Kano on Monday, into the board of KADIPA, its investment promotion agency. A statement from Sir Kashim Ibrahim House said Governor Nasir El-Rufai approved the reconstitution of the board of KADIPA. Established in 2015, KADIPA has led the investment drive of the state and anchored the implementation of the Ease of Doing Business Charter that earned Kaduna State World Bank recognition as the Number One place for doing business in Nigeria. “Mr Nasir El-Rufai has appointed Muhammad Sanusi II into the board…
Academic activities were, yesterday, paralysed nationwide following industrial action declared by Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to press home the non-implementation of the 2009 agreement and stoppage of their February salaries by the Federal Government. Reports from branches of ASUU across the country confirmed that lecturers complied and stayed away from academic activities, including lectures. ASUU had on Monday directed its members to embark on a two-week warning strike because the Federal Government failed to pay salaries of lecturers who did not enroll in the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) and non-implementation of the 2009 agreement and…
Health minister and Conservative MP Nadine Dorries says she has been diagnosed with coronavirus. Ms Dorries, the first MP to test positive, said she had taken all the advised precautions after finding out, and had been self-isolating at home. It comes as a sixth person died from the virus in the UK, which has a total of 382 cases. The latest person to die was a man in his early 80s who had underlying health conditions. Meanwhile, NHS England said it was scaling up its capacity for testing people for the infection, with the number of cases set to rise.…
As soon as news of removal of the former emir filtered in, the palace was thrown into mourning. Residents were seen in groups discussing the matter with shock and disbelief. Some however maintained that it wasn’t altogether unexpected. When our correspondent visited the palace, heavily armed security operatives had already sealed up the place to maintain peace. Though movement in and outside the premises was highly restricted, a palace guard informed our correspondent that before the announcement of his removal, the emir had sent a message to the guards who reported for work that he (emir) was indisposed. Shortly after,…
Representatives of civil society groups, government and private institutions, and the media on Monday, asked Senate to drop further consideration of the anti-social media bill, in the interest of Nigerians. Our correspondents observed that only three speakers out of the 62 individuals, institutions and groups, who submitted memoranda and spoke at the public hearing organised by Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, supported the proposed legislation. Those who opposed the bill argued that it violated the fundamental human rights of Nigerians and contravenes existing international statutes to which Nigeria was a signatory. They also insisted that there…
