Federal government in its effort to combat spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), especially as there is a surge in community transmission, has begun training of over 200,000 Primary Health Care (PHC) workers to reach out to the grassroots. Minister of Health, Mr Osagie Ehanire, who made this known in Abuja at the National Training of Trainers on Primary Healthcare Workers Guide on Covid-19 outbreak preparedness and response, explained that PHC workers were critical as they are the first port of call and contact by clients in communities. He said: “As we migrate to community transmission phase, it has become imperative to…
Founder of DAAR Communications, Mr Raymond Dokpesi, and seven of his family members have tested positive for coronavirus, AIT, a subsidiary of his company, reported Friday. This is coming four days after his son tested positive to the virus. Since the younger Dokpesi had the virus, contact tracing by Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, was said to have begun. Results of the tests by the agency showed that eight other members of the Dokpesi family, among whom are Dokpesi’s daughter-in-law, had been infected, AIT said. The infected members have been reportedly evacuated to the isolation centre at University of…
Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has asked Federal Government to tell Nigerians the number of ghost workers it uncovered in federal universities since the introduction of Integrated Payroll and Personal Information System (IPPIS). ASUU members nationwide are currently on an indefinite strike to protest non-implementation of the 2009 signed agreement and Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) by the Federal Government. The union is opposed to IPPIS and has asked members not to register with the new payment platform. The government in reaction to ASUU’s rejection stopped the February and March salaries of lecturers in 43 federal universities. The demand by…
A preliminary study has found tentative evidence suggesting low levels of vitamin D may make it more likely an individual will die after contracting . The research compared average levels of vitamin D across 20 European countries with Covid-19 infection rate and mortality. It revealed a convincing correlation where countries with low vitamin D levels were also the countries with highest mortality and Covid-19 infection rates. The study has not yet been peer-reviewed and scrutinised by other scientists and is unable to prove vitamin D is the reason behind this link. However, the scientists from Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation Trust…
A number of reported cases of coronavirus patients relapsing after overcoming the disease were actually due to testing failures, South Korean scientists say. Researchers at the South Korean centre for disease control and prevention (CDC) now say it is impossible for the Covid-19 virus to reactivate in human bodies. There have been more than 10,000 confirmed coronavirus cases in South Korea, with 245 deaths - a 2.3% fatality rate, which is lower than the 3.4% average as stated by the World Health Organisation. A total of 277 patients in the country were believed to have fallen ill for a second…
United States department of justice says it will retrieve any part of the repatriated Abacha Loot that is improperly diverted. In a letter signed by Stephen Boyd, assistant attorney general, and addressed to Charles Grassley, chairman of senate committee on finance, the US said the repatriation of $311.8 million was done based on conditions. “The agreement directs that the returned funds be used exclusively for certain specific defined purposes,” the letter read. “Constraining the use of the funds in this way promotes transparency and facilitates monitoring and auditing by independent bodies, as well as by the interested public. “These funds…
