Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, has said Zamfara State which started implementation of Sharia law in Nigeria currently has the highest poverty rate in the country. Speaking at the Mo Ibrahim Forum in Marrakesh, Morocco, weekend, Sanusi said many of those who seized religion as tool of getting power were not necessarily better than the rest of the people. According to him, such people should, however, be given a chance to participate in a democracy, so that they don’t go on pushing a myth that they were not given a chance. “Give them four years, after sometime people find…

An Ikeja High Court on Monday, dismissed the suit filed by Mrs Taiwo Obasanjo, wife of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, seeking the postponement of the wedding of her son Olujonwo to Tope Adebutu. Justice Lateefa Okunnu, dismissed the suit on the grounds that the court lacked jurisdiction to hear the suit because Olujonwo, 33, is an adult. “On March 27, I ordered counsel to direct me on whether the family court can hear a case where the child is an adult. “Counsel have addressed me and I have read the processes before me. “I have found to be very genuine,…
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has faulted claim by a former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi, that he (Obasanjo) planned to kill the former army chief. Wondering why he would want to kill Bamaiyi, Obasanjo stated that his government between 1999 and 2007 arrested the former COAS to clear his name for allegedly killing other people during the reign of military dictator, Gen. Sani Abacha. He said this on Sunday at his Presidential Hilltop residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital while hosting members of Ogun State Correspondents’ chapel. The former President argued that the former Chief of Army…
Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, has told former President Olusegun Obasanjo to desist from accusing people of corruption in Nigeria. Fayose said it was hypocritical of the former president to claim that some church leaders in the country were not only encouraging corruption but also celebrating people with questionable sources of wealth. Obasanjo made the accusation in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Saturday, at the 2017 Convention Lecture of Victory Life Bible Church International while speaking on the theme, “The role of the church in the fight against corruption in Nigeria.” In a statement issued, on Sunday, by his Special…

Police chief Ibrahim Idris has denied that he ordered the killing of Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike. The police yesterday described the report as “false” and “misleading”. In an interview, the governor claimed that the Inspector-General had ordered the state’s Commissioner of Police to kill him. In a statement yesterday, Force spokesman Jimoh Moshood, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), said Wike’s claim was unbecoming of a governor. He said that adequate measures had been put in place to ensure security of lives, including that of the governor. The statement noted that 221 police personnel were recently deployed in Rivers…
Benin President Patrice Talon said he has abandoned plans to reduce the presidential mandate from two terms to one, after parliament rejected a draft bill to change the constitution. Talon, who came to power in a peaceful election one year ago, promised to reduce presidential terms from two five-year terms to one six-year term, in a bid to reduce what he called presidential "complacency" in the tiny West African country. But parliament on Tuesday voted down a bill for a referendum to reform the constitution, which included the provision to reduce presidential terms. "The revision of the constitution is finished,"…
