Food aid will be cut for more than a million hungry Nigerians affected by Boko Haram's insurgency if promised funding from the international community doesn't arrive, according to a United Nations official. Peter Lundberg, the deputy U.N. humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria, wrote in the French newspaper Le Monde that just 15 percent of the U.N. aid appeal for one of the world's worst humanitarian crises has been received. Over the next six months, $242 million is needed to help 1.8 million people, he said. "Without sufficient financing, the World Food Program will have to reduce its vital support," he wrote…
The controversy surrounding ownership of the N13bn ($43.4m, N23m and £27,000) found by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission at the Osborne Towers, Ikoyi, Lagos, took a dramatic turn on Friday evening when Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and National Intelligence Agency claimed ownership of the money. Nigerians on Friday marked three years since the mass abduction of nearly 300 schoolgirls by Boko Haram extremists amid anger that government efforts to negotiate their freedom appear to have stalled. Activists were rallying in the capital, Abuja, and commercial hub Lagos to urge President Muhammadu Buhari's government to do more to free the nearly 200 schoolgirls who remain captive. "It is still a nightmare to me. It is still fresh as if it happened last night," said Rebecca Samuel, whose daughter Sarah remains missing. "The government is trying, but I believe they can do more than what they are…

Qari Mehrajuddin first saw "lightning like a thunder storm" followed by the roar of an explosion, an all-too-familiar sound for residents in Afghanistan's war-torn Nangarhar province. "I thought there was a bombing just outside my home," he said. In reality, the blast was around three miles away, its massive impact bigger than any before seen in the region. On Thursday night, American forces dropped one of the largest conventional bombs ever used in combat on what they described as a tunnel complex used by Islamic State militants in Nangarhar's Achin district. Achin is separated from Pakistan by a range of…

The US just dropped a 21,600-pound conventional bomb in Afghanistan. The bomb, the Massive Ordinance Air Blast, nicknamed "Mother of All Bombs" because of its acronym, is the largest nonnuclear bomb in the US's arsenal. But Russia has an even bigger one. The so-called father of all bombs is thought to be about four times as big as the MOAB. It's a thermobaric bomb with a destruction radius of nearly 1,000 feet and a blast yield of nearly 44 tons of TNT. Thermobaric weapons differ from conventional bombs in that they combine with atmospheric oxygen to greatly extend the blast…
