Fulani herdsmen have converted the National Stadium, Abuja, into a fertile land for cattle pasture as weeds overtake the package B section of the $360m facility. Our correspondent, who visited the stadium on Tuesday, saw tall grasses in almost every part of the complex. Fresh and dried cow dung could be seen on the asphalt within the complex showing that the animals regularly graze on the grasses at the stadium. Security officials manning the gate blamed the sports ministry for the deterioration in the condition of the stadium – and for giving the herdsmen unhindered access to the stadium, which…

Germany survived a whirlwind assault by Chile and capitalised on an awful mistake by the South Americans to claim a 1-0 victory in a pulsating, bad-tempered Confederations Cup final on Sunday. Germany won the title for the first time after Lars Stindl scored the only goal in the 20th minute when Chile midfielder Marcelo Diaz gave the ball away on the edge of his own area. Chile, playing with their trademark high octane style and driven forward by another relentless display by Arturo Vidal, dominated the match but were let down by poor finishing. A dramatic game featured missed chances,…
The election of Ibrahim Gusau as President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria has been annulled. The annulment was announced on Friday in Abuja by National Sports Federations Elections Petitions Appeal Committee. The committee, having looked at the petition sent in by Charles Eyo, who was meant to contest from the north-east but was disqualified to clear the way for Gusau to contest unopposed, was upheld. A bye-election has, therefore, been fixed for July 7 in Abuja. Also, Brown Ebewele and Rosa Collins have both been reinstated into the new AFN board as both individuals won their appeals for unjust…
