Management of the University of Lagos on Wednesday asked students to vacate their hall of residence from Wednesday to 12 noon on Thursday (today).

The institution also announced that lectures would continue virtually from July 26, 2021.

These were parts of the outcome of the emergency meeting which the Vice-Chancellor, Toyin Ogundipe, held with the Senate on Wednesday.

The PUNCH had reported on Tuesday that there was a high influx of students with flu-like and Covid-19 symptoms at the medical centre.

Investigation also revealed that about seven students tested positive for Covid-19.

However, a notice on Wednesday from the UNILAG Director of Student Affairs titled, ‘Important Notice: Immediate Closure Of Hostels To Check The spread Of Covid-19 On Campus,’  ordered students to leave the campus.

It reads, “To check the spread of Covid-19 on campus, the University Senate has directed that all students vacate the halls of residence latest by 12 noon on Thursday, July 15, 2021. No access will be granted to any student after 12 noon on 15 July.

“The hostels will be locked indefinitely; therefore students are advised to move all their personal effects at once. Lectures for the rest of the semester will be delivered virtually with effect from July 26, 2021.”

A separate statement from UNILAG communication unit said those that had contact with the Covid-19 patients had been told to self-isolate.

It reads partly, “Lately, some students have tested positive. These students have been sent to the appropriate designated facilities in the state and contact-tracing has enabled us to identify those who have had exposure and directed them to isolate.”

As of 5pm, many students were said to have packed their bags and heading home.
